The department houses programs focused on exposing and preparing pre-college, college, and adult students for degree level study in art and design. Through rigorous courses in Summer Intensive Studies, Parsons Pre-College Academy, and the Summer Orientation Program for International Students, students are exposed to the potential role of design in their life and society.

Summer Intensive Programs and Applications

Pre-College Academy
This year-round studio art and design program serves students in grades 4 through 12. Courses in drawing, painting, animation design, architecture, digital design, fashion design, illustration, interior design, portfolio development, product design, and graphic design build observational drawing skills and introduce students to the design process through interdisciplinary conceptual problems. Classes meet on Saturday mornings in eleven-week fall and spring sessions. In the summer, the Academy offers two-week intensives on a Monday through Friday schedule.

Summer Programs
Each summer over 1,000 talented high school, college, and adult students from around the world and with widely differing backgrounds come to Parsons to experience rigorous, full-time study and earn college credit. The program introduces students to the intellectual and technical rigors of professional art and design training. Whether in New York or Paris, the urban fabric of these cities and the resources of Parsons enrich and inspire these exceptional academic programs. Classes meet full-time Monday through Friday in four-week sessions.

Summer Intensive Studies: Paris
At summer intensive studies: Paris, you'll experience this vibrant city from an insider's perspective through exposure to European art, design, and history within Paris' hundreds of museums and design studios. Classes meet at sites throughout the city, ranging from exhibitions, architectural landmarks to parks. Weekend excursions and field trips in and around Paris complement these two- and four-week courses.

Summer Orientation Program for International Students (SOPIS)
Each summer, Parsons welcomes international students for an eight-week pre-enrollment program focused on strengthening English language skills through design contexts. These undergraduate and graduate degree candidates spend the summer exploring Parsons, investigating New York, and gathering the requisite tools to achieve academic success when they enter full-time degree programs in the fall.

Parsons Boot Camp

The MFA Design+Technology Program is an intense, immersive experience. Students entering the program need to work fluently and fluidly in web development as well as visual and interactive design. Boot Camp is a three-week summer course that brings students up to speed so they can dive directly into conceptual and practical work from day one in the Fall semester.

Housing in New York

Any student participating in Summer Intensive Studies can reside in The New School residence halls. All students will be housed in residence halls within walking distance of the Village campus. Accommodations are shared rooms only. There are no single rooms available. Students 18 years of age and younger for any portion of the program will be required to abide by our curfew system. The University Housing Office will forward information regarding residence hall assignments after receipt of the Housing Application and full payment of housing fees.

If you are interested in securing a room, download, print and complete the Housing Application and forward it directly to The New School Housing Office, 79 Fifth Avenue, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10003. With your application, include full payment.

2. Make payment by check or credit card. With your application, you must include a check made payable to The New School in the amount of $1900 (college/adult) or $2375 (pre-college).

Additional information, including a housing contract to confirm your reservation, will be sent after receipt. Placement is decided on a first-come, first-served basis.

The priority deadline for making housing registrations is April 1 (Session I) and May 1 (Session II). The housing payment and the tuition must be paid separately. Students are encouraged to reserve a space early. Housing is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration for the program does not guarantee housing.

Security and Curfew

All residence halls have 24-hour guards on duty. Entry is carefully regulated. All guests (including parents, guardians and siblings) must leave a photo ID and register in the guest log when visiting. Students enrolled in Summer Intensive Studies who are 18 years of age or younger at the start of the program are subject to curfew requirements. This curfew has been established for participant's safety. University Housing will enforce a midnight for the duration of the program. Failure to observe this curfew will result in removal from the residence hall.

Students 19 and older will be assigned to non-curfew space and may request overnight guest accommodation on a very limited basis. A limited number of guest rooms are available for visiting overnight guests in other buildings during the summer for a fee.

Curfew Policy

  • Summer residents who are 18 years of age or younger on July 1, 2009, must check in for curfew at 12:00 midnight every night.
  • All guests must exit the Residence Hall by curfew time. No overnight guests are allowed (including family members).
  • The RA on Duty will check each night to ensure that students are in the building at curfew, and students are not permitted to leave until 7:30 a.m. the following morning. Breaking curfew is grounds for removal from the Residence Hall.
  • Students are required to spend every weeknight in their assigned Residence Hall. Students are only permitted to spend weekend nights (Friday and Saturday) away from the building if their parent(s)/guardian(s) have submitted a completed Weekend Away Permission Form by the prescribed time. Any misuse or forgery of the Weekend Away form will be grounds for dismissal from Student Housing.

Meals

New School University Dining Services by Chartwells will provide cafeteria services for all students participating in the discounted meal plan. Exceptional value and variety will be offered along with the convenience of pre-paid meals without the hassle of cash or sales tax. Please contact the Dining Services Office to ask about cost saving meal plans and tax saving benefits. Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in the non-refundable summer meal plan by May 1. Additionally, some residence hall suites are equipped with kitchenettes. Check-in/Check-out

Check-in at the Residence Halls are between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. Residence Hall office hours are typically 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Should you arrive when the office is closed, you can have the security guard on duty contact the Residence Hall staff member on duty to check you in.

Check-out at the Residence Halls must be by 12:00 noon. A later check-out time may be requested to the Office of Student Housing and Residence Life. No late check-out will be allowed without prior approval.

Residence Hall Handbook

Students enrolled in Parsons’ Summer Intensive Studies are expected to abide by all policies stated in the Residence Hall Handbook in addition to those specific to the program. Read the online version of the Residence Hall Handbook or get a printed copy from the Office of Student Housing and Residence Life.

Weekends Away

Students enrolled in Parsons’ Summer Intensive Studies who are 18 years of age and younger at the start of the program are required to spend every night, Sunday thru Thursday in the Residence Hall. Students who wish to spend the weekend (Friday & Saturday evening) away from campus must have written permission from their parent and/or guardian at the start of the program. Students are required to return for Sunday evening curfew by 12 midnight. A Weekend Away Permission Form will accompany the housing assignment letter in the mail. All Weekend Away Forms must be submitted by check-in. Failure to observe the Weekend Away policy will result in removal from the Residence Hall. Please note that the University offices are closed on Fridays during the summer. Any changes to your initially submitted Weekend Away form must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays for the following weekend. Any form received after that point will not be accepted as permission for the upcoming weekend.

Residence Hall Policies

It is the intention of the Office of Student Housing & Residence Life that the Residence Halls be a safe and comfortable home for all residents. Consequently, there are specific guidelines/policies that must be followed. Any violation of these guidelines/policies outlined in the Residence Hall Handbook and in the Housing Contract will be viewed by the Office of Student Housing & Residence Life as grounds for immediate removal from the Residence Hall without refund. Please note: Where applicable, violation of these guidelines/polices by the guest of a resident will result in the removal of the resident from the Residence Hall.

Removal from the residence hall (with no refund) will occur if a student participates in any of the following offenses:

  • Consumption, storage, distribution, sale, or possession of alcohol by the resident or his/her guest regardless of age.
  • Consumption, storage, distribution, sale, or possession of illegal drugs
  • Sale or distribution of prescription or non-prescription drugs and medication.
  • Smoking in any bedrooms, suites, or common areas inside any Residence Hall.
  • Posing a threat to oneself or to the community.
  • Any verbal, psychological, or physical harassment, intimidation, or assault to another person.
  • Any form of violence, vandalism, theft, or defacement of any personal or building property.
  • Dropping or throwing any object into or out of the residence halls and/or windows.
  • Unauthorized entry into any area of the building, including the roof, other students’ rooms, or offices.
  • Failure to comply with requests made by the Residence Life Staff.
  • Dismissal from any University summer academic program.
  • Failure to abide by the guest policy and/or the curfew policy.
  • Creating excessive noise despite warnings.
  • Any other reason as determined by the Director of Student Housing and Residence Life or designee.

Residence Hall Guest Policy

The following policy has been developed with the security and well being of the Residence Hall community in mind:

  • Residents are required to meet their guests at the front desk.
  • All guests, including family members and/or guardians, must leave a valid photo ID at the front desk. Passports will not be accepted.
  • Residents are expected to remain with their guests at all times and are held responsible for the actions of their guests.
  • The Residence Hall staff reserves the right to forbid entry to any nonresident who violates residence hall regulations or policies, or causes a disturbance of any kind.
  • Residents may face removal from the residence hall if their guest violates University or building policies.
  • Residents are allowed to have a maximum of two guests at a time, and a maximum of 4 guests per room at a time.

Health Services

Student Health Services offers medical and counseling services to enrolled students. Our professional staff includes registered nurses, physicians and licensed therapists. The center provides basic out-patient care. Hours of operation for Student Health Services will be available at orientation.

Cancellations and Refunds

All cancellations must be made in writing and received before the indicated dates below. Cancellations should be mailed to Parsons SPACE, 66 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York 10011 or summer@newschool.edu.

New York Session I:

  • Prior to April 1, full refund of tuition and housing payments.
  • Prior to May 1, refund of tuition and housing payments less 20% penalty. After May 1, no tuition or housing refunds.

New York Session I:

  • Prior to May 1, full refund of tuition payments.
  • Prior to June 1, refund of tuition less 20% penalty.
  • After June 1, no tuition or housing refunds.
  • The $250 housing deposit is forfeited in all instances.

Housing in Paris

Students reside in dormitories at La Maison des Mines located in the 5th arrondissement. Parsons live-in residence staff supervises, provides information, and organizes social events. The Parsons staff offers 24-hour support for program participants, including emergency assistance, and general help with language and transportation. Note: The Paris dormitories offer economical student housing and are not comparable to a hotel.

Four-week program: $1,900
Two-week program: $950

Housing space is limited, and students receive assignments in the order
in which their applications are received. To reserve a room for the
Paris program, please follow the instructions on the Housing
Application. Applications must include full payment of $1,900 for the
four-week program and $950 for the two-week program.

Please note that the course Registration Form and the Housing
Application must be sent to separate offices with separate checks.

Students reside in shared rooms. Shared rooms have shared bathrooms on every floor. Laundry facilities are located in the building and nearby. Additional details and information regarding housing will be mailed after registration.

Students must comply with all house rules. Policies restrict overnight guests, late night noise, and phone calls after 10 p.m. Those students 18 and younger must follow a curfew of midnight each night.

Meals

There is no meal plan. Communal kitchens are available in residences. Students also receive lists of supermarkets, inexpensive restaurants, and cafés in the neighborhood. Food expenses are estimated to range from $40 to $50 per day.

To reserve a room for the Paris program, please download the Housing Application below and follow the instructions on the form. With your application, include full payment of $1,900 for the four-week program and $950 for the two-week program. Please note that the course Registration Form and the Housing Application need to be sent to separate offices with separate checks.
Due to limited space, housing registrations are awarded based on the order in which they are received.

Please note: These are firm deadlines and no exceptions to this policy will be granted. Should a course be canceled due to low enrollment, a full refund of tuition and housing fees will be issued.
