The summer housing term begins on Sunday, May 24, 2009 at 3pm and ends on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 12 noon. The minimum stay is a four-week period unless otherwise approved by the Assistant Director of Summer Programs and Housing Services. Current spring 2009 New School students are eligible for the early move-in and the discounted summer housing rate.

Summer Application Due Dates
Currently enrolled New School students (i.e., you must be enrolled during the spring 2009 semester) may apply for summer housing. The priority deadline is Friday, April 17, 2009. Applications received after the priority deadline will be processed on a first come first serve basis. Please indicate on the application any roommate or suitemate requests. First choice housing requests cannot be guaranteed.

Summer Classes
Students whose summer classes end after August 8, 2009 must make a written request for an extension to the Office of Student Housing and Residence Life no later than July 20, 2009.

Payment
Summer housing applications must be accompanied with full payment. This payment will be applied to the total summer rental charges. $250 of your housing payment is non-refundable. Please make checks payable to The New School.

Please submit payment with your application to the Office of Student Housing & Residence Life, located at 79 Fifth Avenue, 5th floor. Your ALVIN account must have a zero balance in order to receive summer housing accommodations.

Assignment Information:

  1. New School summer students will be housed at either 20th Street or Stuyvesant Town unless they are current residences of 23rd Street and/or Grove Street Residence Halls, in which case they have the option to make special arrangements with the Assistant Director of Summer Programs and Housing Services.
  2. The space you occupy during the 2008/2009 academic year may not necessarily be the assignment you receive for the summer.
  3. Assignment extensions for students who do not live in student housing for fall 2009 cannot be guaranteed and are granted on a space availability basis. Charges for extensions will be based on the weekly rate and payment must be made in advance. If approved, the Office of Student Housing and Residence Life reserves the right to change a resident’s room for the extended period of residency.

Check–in:

  1. Spring 2009 residents who receive summer housing should be prepared to move to their summer assignments between May 18, 2009 and May 24, 2009. You will be contacted by May 18, 2009 or earlier with your assigned move date. Failure to move by that date may result in loss of housing.
  2. Students not currently living in the residence halls may check in no earlier than May 24, 2009 after 3pm at the residence hall to which assigned.
  3. Regular check-in dates are on Sundays after 3 pm and checkouts are on Saturdays before noon. Those who wish to check in or check out during the week must make arrangements with the Residence Hall Director of the residence hall to which assigned.

Checkout:

  1. Those not living in the residence halls for the fall 2009 semester are required to check out of the assigned summer space by Saturday, August 8, 2009 by 12 noon, unless special arrangments are made with the Assistant Director for Summer Programs and Housing Serivces.
  2. Residents who are not staying in the residence halls for the entire summer must check out by 12 noon on the designated departure day. Specific instructions for check out will be disseminated to students prior to the check out date.
  3. In order to be considered “officially” checked out, residents must remove all possessions, refuse and debris from the building, return the room, suite and mailbox keys (where applicable) and complete the necessary check out paperwork.

INTERIM HOUSING:

  1. Summer students who have a fall 2009 room assignment may indicate on their summer housing contract that they wish to remain in residence from August 8, 2009–August 22, 2009. A fee of $ 250.00 will be charged to a student’s account for this interim housing period.
  2. During the Interim Housing dates, the student agrees to physically reside in their summer assignment until moving into their academic year assignment. If belongings are left unattended, the student will take responsibility for all costs related to the cleaning, storage and/or removal of their possessions.

Room Rates for Currently Enrolled New School Students
Summer housing is offered to spring 2009 New School students at a reduced rate. Apply early to secure a room! As indicated below, the term rate is less expensive than the weekly rate! All rates include a $100 nonrefundable payment.

  1. Term Rate: The Summer term is eleven (11) weeks beginning on May 24, 2009. Students who elect to stay in the residence halls for the entire summer will be charged a term rate that includes a nonrefundable payment of $250. Shared Room:

    Single Room: $4,120.00
    Shared Room:$2,675.00

  2. Weekly Rate: Weekly rates are assessed for students who do not choose to stay in the residence hall for the entire 11-week period. The rate includes a nonrefundable payment of $250. There is a minimum stay of four (4) weeks.

    Single Room: $515.00
    Shared Room: $410.00

  3. Cancellation: Students who cancel their summer housing will be charged the weekly rate for the period they were in housing and assessed a $100 cancellation fee. Requests to cancel must be made in writing two (2) weeks prior to the intended departure date in order to receive a refund of the balance of your housing charges. Requests to cancel received less than two weeks prior to the intended departure date will receive no refund of housing charges.

For fall 2009 Residents with Academic Year 2009/2010 Housing Assignment
Those deposited to reside in a residence hall for the Academic Year 2009/2010 and remaining in Interim Housing and assigned to a different room for the summer will be required to move within 24 hours of notification that the fall space is ready between the dates of August 8, 2009 and August 22, 2009. You must be in residence until you move to your fall assignment. Please plan accordingly.
