Are the vaccines safe?
The vaccines are extremely safe as vaccines go. Side effects are very mild and infrequent, with the most common effect being soreness at the point of injection. Students allergic to thimersol (a component of the vaccine) should not get the menomune vaccines; this is a very rare allergy.
There are presently two vaccines available: MENOMUNE, which has been available for years, and a new vaccine, MENACTRA. Both vaccines protect against sensitive strains of A, C, Y and W-135 meningoccus. MENACTRA is felt to provide possible higher levels of immunity and a greater booster effect. |
