Federal Work Study Opportunities

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program provides employment opportunities for students enrolled in a degree and/or certificate program and registered for at least six credits in a semester. The Federal Work Study program is administered by the Office of Student Financial Services.

There are specific rules for all FWS positions, regardless of the position a student obtains: Students are permitted to work a maximum of 20 hours per week throughout the academic year when classes are in session. During the summer and official recesses, students may work a maximum of 35 hours per week. Earnings from student jobs are not applied directly toward their tuition bills. Rather, students are paid biweekly for their hours of work, and they determine how best to utilize these funds to meet their educational expenses.

Students whose financial aid award letter includes a Federal Work Study offer must activate their award within 30 days of the award notification by obtaining a position and submitting all required paperwork. Federal Work Study positions are listed online at www.collegecentral.com with contact information for the hiring supervisors. Students apply for positions directly to the supervisor, but, once hired, submit all payroll paperwork to the Office of Student Financial Services for processing. Student Financial Services processes all payroll information for work-study students and has oversight of Federal Work Study policies and procedures.

For more information on student employment policies, please reference the FAQ or the Federal Work Study Handbook, or contact the Student Employment Office at 212.229.8930 or seo@newschool.edu. Student Financial Services counselors are available at the walk-in center at 72 Fifth Avenue, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, to answer questions about Federal Work Study employment.
