I’m sure that for many of you, the current economic crisis is contributing additional strain to an already full plate. Student Financial Services is here to help alleviate some of that stress. Whether you are worried about your school expenses, having difficulty managing your finances, or simply need some guidance, I encourage you to take advantage of our services. Below is information about our office and the financial services available to you.
The New School Office of Student Financial Services (SFS) provides a comprehensive program of financial assistance and financing options. We are committed to making all reasonable effort to removing need as a barrier to matriculation and to applying need analysis and awarding policies equitably across the university. Our primary role is to identify possible sources of assistance and financing options for students and their families so that admitted students can enroll and continuing students can successfully complete their course of study.
Institutional Funds
The New School has established significant funding for institutional scholarships, fellowships, grants and stipends, and plans to return over $71 million in tuition revenue to students under its institutional aid program for 2009-2010. Graduate students and undergraduate students enrolling in Jazz or Mannes are not required to file an application to be considered for institutional funds as these awards are based on merit. Lang College students, Parsons undergraduate students, and The New School for General Studies undergraduate students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or the on-line International Scholarship Application to be considered for institutional funding.
Supplemental Sources of Assistance
To supplement the institutional aid program, The New School participates in the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Family Education Loan (including Stafford and PLUS) and Federal Work-Study programs. By filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), eligibility for these programs is determined automatically by a financial aid officer. To be considered for federal financial assistance you must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. International students are not eligible for federal assistance but may be eligible to borrow through private credit-based education loan programs.
Applying for Federal Aid Programs
Federal Aid Eligible students should complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Our school code is 002780. You can either sign your application using a Personal Identification Number (a PIN can be obtained at www.pin.ed.gov) if you have one, or by printing out a confirmation page and mailing it to the processing center. It will take approximately 3-4 weeks for processing so please complete the application as soon as possible. It is essential that you review the processed Student Aid Report once you receive it and confirm that all the entered information is correct.
Extended Payment Plan and Electronic Services
The New School offers an extended payment plan, which allows families to pay for tuition, fees, and campus housing over the course of the semester rather than in one lump sum at the beginning of each term. Five or four-month plans are available for Fall and Spring term charges. The university also provides electronic Student Account services such as electronic invoices, direct deposit to student accounts of financial aid funds in excess of charges, and the ability to designate authorized account users (such as parents). We also encourage you to keep tabs on your account by frequently accessing your Financial Aid and Student Account information on my.newschool.edu.
