The New School has a long history of welcoming veterans to its various courses and degree programs, recognizing in their unique life experience an exceptional potential only those who have served can claim. This tradition continues with the Student Veteran Services office. The mission of this office is to facilitate your success as a student: to assist with the procedures of GI Bill certification, to direct your registration and academic questions to the appropriate office, to support your academic and personal success, and to ensure you enjoy your time at The New School. The Student Veteran Services coordinator is the primary source of information and assistance for all veterans and veteran dependents on campus, regardless of service or benefits status, gender, age, sexual identity, or religion.
In keeping with the New School mission, "education for all," all veterans may submit a Joint Services Transcript (JST) to the Transfer Credit Evaluation (TCE) group for consideration. The TCE and individual academic advisors will consult the American Council for Education (ACE) guidelines regarding equivalent curricula for military to college credits. General education and degree requirement obligations will be considered first, and all remaining elective obligations next. The TCE and degree advisors will adhere to individual program policies concerning maximum transferable credits allowed. Only justifiable military training will be considered.
All JSTs must be submitted by the end of the student's first semester of attendance at The New School. This ensures that a student's TCE processes in a timely manner and provides accurate credit information for informed academic advising. Any JST submitted after the first semester must be done through the Registrar's Office via the academic appeals process. Veterans admitted to the Schools of Public Engagement's Bachelor's Program for Adults and Transfer Students (BPATS) can also choose to participate in Prior Learning courses, in order to have atypical or non-structured military experience transferred as elective credits. In these cases, veterans who wish to use occupational or mission experience as credits toward their liberal arts degree may enroll in two semesters of guided presentation of these life events to their program directors.
Mariette Kalinowski is a former sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps who served from 2002 to 2010, including two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom. She joins The New School from the City University of New York, where she served as the interim Student Veteran Coordinator for both City College of New York and John Jay School of Criminal Justice. She has also worked in the City University of New York's central Office of Veterans Affairs and as a student veteran mentor with the social work program Project for Returning Opportunities in Veterans Education (PROVE) in the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. Mariette earned her Bachelor of Arts in Literature, cum laude, and her Master of Fine Arts in Fiction, summa cum laude, from Hunter College in 2011 and 2014, respectively, and used her Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to pay her tuition.
