Career Services offers counseling throughout the calendar year to students. The career development process encourages you to explore career path possibilities, enhance self-discovery, develop your own self-identity, gain confidence, and make decisions about the directions you will take along your career path. This is a collaborative process between you and your career counselor/adviser. The primary responsibility of your career counselor/adviser is to encourage your own personal growth and development while respecting your freedom of choice and your privacy.

Career counseling/advising takes six basic forms depending on the nature of the interaction.
Duration: 30 minutesAdvance appointment requiredTypical topics: Clarifying your career interests, skills, and values; aligning your interests with a major. Assessments are reviewed in a follow-up session (2nd appointment).

Duration: 60 minutesAdvance appointment requiredTypical topics: Interview session is simulated; questions that can be expected on an interview are discussed. Session is videotaped and reviewed.

Whether you are rethinking your program of study or getting ready to look for a job, we administer personal assessment tools that can provide valuable guidance by measuring your occupational interests, personal preferences, communication style, motivated abilities, and personality type.
Schedule an appointment to take an assessment and review it with a counselor/adviser. If you wish to take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and/or the Strong Interest Inventory, you must be willing to make the commitment to attend a minimum of three one-hour counseling sessions with your counselor/adviser. Assessments cannot be taken or evaluated during walk-ins.
Practice/mock interviews are 60-minute-long appointments during which you will be asked a number of interview questions specific to an area of interest or job. During this time, a counselor/adviser will provide feedback on your answers, review your strengths and areas that need improvement, and address any questions you may have.
If you would like the session to be recorded, please specify this when scheduling your appointment. If your practice/mock interview is recorded, you may receive the copy of the session for your own personal viewing. In order for your counselor/adviser to ask you industry specific questions, please attach a résumé, cover letter, and job description when scheduling your appointment. You may give a brief description of your field of interest if you are not interviewing for a specific job.
If you are unsure of how to dress the day of your actual interview, you are welcome to dress in interview attire for your practice/mock interview, which many students find makes for a more realistic experience. Your counselor/adviser can give you feedback on your attire as well.
Career counseling is always private and confidential. We do not release counseling records or information about counseling sessions without written authorization from the advisee. The Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) stipulates the limited circumstances within which students’ personal information may be shared with third parties.
Note: Due to Career Services’ working relationship with other offices of The New School, we are occasionally asked to confirm a student's career counseling attendance by professors, academic advisors, and others who refer students to our services. As permitted by FERPA, we do share the number of appointments a student has attended with those New School staff members with an educational need to know. However, the actual content of sessions is never released to third parties, unless the content meets one of the limitations to confidentiality outlined in FERPA.
Statistical information about the users of Career Services services is recorded for the purpose of university internal research and/or demographic reporting. Nothing that would identify individuals is included in such reports. Examples of demographic data include gender, ethnicity, academic status (probation, graduate, senior year, etc.), and academic major. This information allows us to improve our services.
