Federal Work-Study (On-Campus)

The Federal Work Study (FWS) program provides employment opportunities to students who are both enrolled in a degree and/or certificate program and registered for at least six credits per semester. FWS is administered by the Office of Student Financial Services.

There are specific rules for all FWS positions, regardless of what position the student obtains. Students may work up to 20 hours per week throughout the academic year. During the summer and official breaks, students may work a maximum of 35 hours per week. Earnings from student jobs are not applied directly toward the tuition bill. Instead, students are paid biweekly in return for their work and they determine how to best utilize these funds to meet their educational expenses.

Students who have been given a FWS offer on their Financial Aid Award letter must activate their award by obtaining a position. FWS positions are listed online at www.newschool.edu/student-jobs, along with contact information for the hiring supervisor. Students apply for positions directly to the supervisor, but, once hired, submit all payroll paperwork to the Office of Student Financial Services for processing. Student financial services processes all of the payroll information and has oversight of FWS policies and procedures.

For information on student employment policies, please reference the FAQ, the FWS Handbook, or contact the Student Employment Office at 212.229.8930 or seo@newschool.edu. Student financial services counselors are available at the walk-in center at 72 Fifth Avenue, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, to answer questions about FWS employment.

Federal Work-Study (On-Campus)

Step 1

FWS is an employment program for federal-aid eligible students. Students are required to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by May 1 to be considered for this financial aid award. If you have been chosen for verification, submit all requested documents for processing within 30 days. Requests are available for viewing online at MyNewSchool.edu.

Step 2

If you have already filed the FAFSA, please verify that you have been awarded work-study funds by checking your most recent Financial Aid Award letter or accessing your MyNewSchool account.

Step 3

Once you have determined that you have a work-study award, you should try to secure a work-study position. To see work-study job postings, students should register on the New School Careers web site*:

Registration enables you to search and apply for jobs online, you must post your résumé, cover letter, and the FWS Eligibility letter under the "Other Document" as a proof of your FWS award. Employers will review résumés and contact suitable candidates.

Students should contact supervisors hiring for positions of interest to them.

Step 4

Once hired, please follow the instructions from your supervisor. You will also receive an email from the HR department asking you to submit the hiring paperwork. Please note that you may not begin working until all requested documents are processed and a confirmation email has been sent to you. Please do not submit any hiring documents to Student Financial Services. Your supervisor will notify us electronically once you are hired.

Step 5

Once your paperwork has been processed, you and your supervisor will receive an email letting you know that you may begin working. Any hours worked prior to this email will have to be paid by the hiring department.

Step 6

Submit your timesheets by the payroll deadlines for processing. Direct deposit is highly recommended.
