The Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) provides academic support and financial assistance to young people who might not meet all the traditional college admissions criteria, but who in other ways show promise of succeeding in college. Students admitted through HEOP receive a number of services designed to help them succeed. At The New School, HEOP works to recruit and support undergraduate students at Parsons The New School for Design and Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts.

Pre-Freshman Summer
All students accepted into HEOP are required to participate in an intensive six-week summer program to prepare them for the academic and/or fine arts challenges they will encounter during their freshman year of college. Studio and liberal arts courses, individual counseling, and workshops help them begin to prepare for and anticipate the demands they will face. HEOP juniors and seniors serve as mentors to the incoming class and help structure the summer experience. Various enrichment activities take place throughout the summer to add balance to the academic load.

Tutoring
Tutoring, an aid to academic success, is available to all HEOP students. Group and individual tutoring sessions  are offered by schools and departments and directly through the HEOP office. All freshman and any students experiencing academic difficulty must attend regular tutoring sessions. In addition, monthly group workshops help students develop study skills and share strategies for academic achievement.

Counseling
All HEOP students receive one-on-one academic and career counseling. Counseling sessions are tailored to help individuals explore avenues for growth in the university, identify their own strengths, and ensure a healthy adjustment to college-level work. Counselors provide on-going support and guidance in making decisions about choosing a major, internship opportunities, financial aid, post-graduation study or work, and other topics depending on the needs of the individual.

Financial Aid
Students admitted through HEOP receive financial aid packages designed to meet the full cost of tuition through a combination of grants, loans, and work. In addition, all HEOP students receive a stipend for books, supplies, commuting costs, and other school-related expenses.
