About the Plan

The New School offers a university-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan: the Aetna Open Choice PPO Plan, administered by Aetna Student Health. The plan covers basic medical, surgical, and hospital costs for accidents and sicknesses that occur any time of day, anywhere in the world.

Plan Highlights 2013-2014

Student Health Services
The Student Health Services fee is $305 per semester, which provides access to medical and counseling services on campus as well as the Basic Accident Insurance Plan (Plan 1).

Student Health Insurance Plan (Plan 2)

    • The annual fee is $2,602, billed in two (2) installments: fall, $1,055; spring, $1,547.
    • Coverage for accidents and sickness and for mental health are available from August 20, 2013, through August 19, 2014.
    • The aggregate per-condition maximum is $500,000.
    • The annual plan deductible is $100.

Physician Office Visit
Aetna Network Provider: 90 percent of the negotiated charge
Outside of Aetna's network: 60 percent of the reasonable charge; $25 office visit co-pay

In-Patient Hospital Visit
Aetna Network Provider: 90 percent of the negotiated charge
Outside of Aetna's network: 60 percent of the reasonable charge

Prescription Coverage
Prescription benefits include a $500,000 prescription maximum per policy year.

If you use a pharmacy in Aetna's network, Aetna covers 100 percent of the negotiated charge after

  • $25 co-pay for each generic prescription drug,
  • $40 co-pay for each preferred brand-name prescription drug, or
  • $50 co-pay for each nonpreferred brand-name prescription drug

If you use a pharmacy outside of Aetna's network, Aetna covers 70 percent of the reasonable charge after

  • $25 co-pay for each generic prescription drug,
  • $40 co-pay for each preferred brand-name prescription drug, or
  • $50 co-pay for each nonpreferred brand-name prescription drug
