The New School funds institutional scholarships, fellowships, grants, and stipends as part of its comprehensive financial aid program.
All awards for graduate students and for undergraduate students in Jazz and Contemporary Music or Mannes College are based on merit and made as part of the admission process. Therefore, incoming students in these programs are not required to file a financial aid application to be considered for institutional funds. (Merit decisions are final and cannot be appealed.) Howevever, graduate students and Jazz or Mannes undergraduates seeking financial assistance from federal and state sources should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov using our School Code of 002780.
Undergraduate students in Eugene Lang College, Parsons, and The New School for Public Engagement who are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens must file the FAFSA to be considered for need-based New School funds or federal/state programs. Admitted applicants with complete and accurate financial aid applications can expect to receive an award notice within two weeks after they receive an offer of admission.
Beginning with the 2011-2012 academic year, incoming students in the Parsons AAS program and New School for Public Engagement undergraduate programs who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must file the Undergraduate International Scholarship Application to be considered for institutional scholarships and other financial awards. This application is used only by these two programs.
Continuing students whose financial aid awards are based on merit (see above) are not required to apply for scholarship renewal every year
Continuing students receiving or seeking need-based institutional funds and/or state or federal supported financial aid must file the FAFSA in advance of every school year. Undergraduate students whose institutional funds are based on need should complete the FAFSA before the published deadlines for renewal of their New School awards or for limited types of federal or state funding.International undergraduates receiving New School funds are not required to file a renewal annually.
Continuing student award processing begins in April and extends through the summer months. All students should check the status of their financial aid and student accounts online at my.newschool.edu on a regular basis.
Mannes Extension Division Diploma students who are U.S. citizens or legal residents may be eligible for most forms of government financial aid, student loans, veterans' benefits, etc. Students and prospective students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to establish their eligibility for need-based aid. The FAFSA can be completed on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Merit scholarship assistance is not available to students in the Extension Division Diploma program.

Financial Aid Appeal Process: Students whose families have experienced a change in their financial circumstances since they completed their financial aid application should complete the front and back pages of the Petition for Special Circumstances to help Student Financial Services determine whether additional financial assistance may be available. All petitions must be complete and submitted to the Office of Student Financial Services with all the required documentation. All completed petitions will be reviewed in accordance with federal regulations and institutional policies. It is important to note that not all changes in financial circumstances will result in increased financial assistance. Students who are seeking financial assistance and who have not yet applied should complete the appropriate application for assistance (see chart above). Not all students are eligible for assistance under the aid programs administered by Student Financial Services.
