The Office of Recreation and Intramural Sports offers many opportunities for students to become physically active and meet new friends. Our mission is to bring recreation and sports to the student body. Our structured and non-structured programs serve to increase positive social interaction and build community. We design programs and activities for students at all levels of experience, ability, knowledge, and interest. We also build leadership and professional development in our student volunteer staff.
Throughout the academic year, the office hosts weekly group fitness programs, intramural team sports, outdoor activities, and special events. In addition, The New School now offers three competitive athletic teams: men's basketball, and women's and men's cross country track teams. Through participation in recreational activities and intramural and interscholastic sports, students develop critical life skills like teamwork, stress reduction, and networking. Note: most events are also open to New School faculty and staff.
The Office of Recreation and Intramural Sports encourages students to get involved in programs and make suggestions for future activities. The office is also interested in collaborating with other groups; please contact us with any ideas. For more information, including schedules, locations, and descriptions of programs, visit http://blogs.newschool.edu/recreation/. To sign up for programs, events, and teams, students must be enrolled in a New
School degree program and present a valid newcard (university ID) and proof
of health insurance.
Eugene Lang College senior Alex Knapp knew he wanted to play basketball wearing a New School jersey. He did not know how quickly The New School's graphic designers, anthropologists, poets, and urban theorists would leap into action. Watch Alex mastermind the birth of The New School's basketball team.
