The New School’s first priority is the safety of its students. Resources and response plans are in place for every manner of disruptive or emergency situation at every level of impact: personal emergencies (such as sickness or injury), campus disturbances (such as a faculty strike or fire), and widespread events or conditions affecting New York City or the nation (such as weather disturbances, blackouts, or terrorist threats). These policies and procedures are reviewed and, where appropriate, revised and enhanced on a regular basis. The university’s Emergency Response Team is in frequent contact with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to gather and implement the most up-to-date information and advice on emergency management.
In addition to the university’s highly trained and ever-present Campus Security and Health Services personnel, the New School community is protected and served by New York City’s police, fire, and emergency medical teams--the finest, and fastest, in the nation.
Any emergency has at least two phases: the initial crisis and its management, followed by the recovery phase. Our goal in every instance is first, to assess and secure the health and safety of each individual and second, to take all necessary actions to restore the full and regular operational routine as quickly and seamlessly as possible.
Ultimately, safety is a collaborative effort. Specific information about emergency preparation and response for all members of the university community is available on this website. We ask that you become familiar with the information contained on these pages, so that you will know exactly what to do, whom to call, where to go, and what to expect in the event that an emergency situation arises in your life at The New School. You will also find advice and resources to help you avert involvement in or prevent the occurrence of dangerous or injurious situations.
Sincerely,
James Murtha, Executive Vice President
