Columbia have passed medical marijuana bills. One-third of Americans now live
in a state where medical marijuana is legal. New York has proposed a bill that
would create a state-regulated medical marijuana program allowing seriously ill
patients to access medical marijuana under the supervision of a healthcare
practitioner. Despite the expansion of medical marijuana programs across the
country and a growing base of scientific evidence about the efficacy of medical
marijuana in treating certain medical conditions, information for mental health
and treatment providers in New York about medical marijuana is limited. This
program is designed to provide a forum for mental health and treatment
professionals to learn about and discuss medical marijuana as well as the bill
that is pending in the New York State Legislature.Guest Speakers include:
Dr. Sunil
Aggarwal, John Crepsac LCSW, Dr.

New School present Nation Books author
and Puffin Foundation Writing Fellow Jeremy Scahill in conversation with Spencer Ackerman, a national security
reporter and blogger for Wired magazine. In
Scahill's newest book, Dirty Wars: The World is a Battlefield (Nation Books,
April 2013), he takes us inside America's new covert wars. The foot
soldiers in these battles operate globally and inside the United States with
orders from the White House to do whatever is necessary to hunt down, capture,
or kill individuals designated by the president as enemies. Drawn from the
ranks of the Navy SEALs, Delta Force, former Blackwater and other private
security contractors, the CIA's Special Activities Division, and the Joint
Special Operations Command (JSOC), these elite soldiers operate worldwide, with
thousands of secret commandos working in more than one hundred countries.
Funded through "black budgets," Special Operations Forces conduct
missions in denied areas, engage in targeted killings, snatch and grab
individuals, and direct drone, AC-130 and cruise missile strikes. While the
Bush administration deployed these ghost militias, President Barack Obama has
expanded their operations and given them new scope and legitimacy. Dirty Wars follows the consequences of
the declaration that "the world is a battlefield," as
Scahill uncovers the most important foreign policy story of our
time. Through his brave reporting, Scahill exposes the true nature of the
dirty wars the United States government struggles to keep hidden.Jeremy
Scahill is the National Security Correspondent for the Nation magazine
and the author of the New
York Times best-seller Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army (Nation Books,
2007). He has reported from Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen, the former
Yugoslavia, and elsewhere across the globe. Scahill is a frequent guest on a
wide array of programs, appearing regularly on The Rachel Maddow
Show, Real Time with Bill Maher, Democracy Now!, and Bill Moyers Journal.
Scahill's work has sparked several Congressional investigations and won some of
journalism's highest honors. He was twice awarded the prestigious George Polk
Award, in 1998 for foreign reporting and in 2008 for his book Blackwater.
He is also a producer and writer of the film Dirty Wars, selected for the US documentary competition at the 2013
Sundance Film Festival.

NSSR Psych--Riding the Wave: Mind-Body Tools for Managing Cravings

Join us for a unique workshop where contemporary psychotherapy and contemplative mind body traditions will be brought together with mutual regard and support for each other. People who were trained in industrial design and other fields are often working today in ways that are blurring the traditional boundaries. Moving from one complex problem to another, understanding what the social and technological causes are, and knowing how to address them, requires that designers develop not only skills of making and of craft, but also skills of thinking and analysis—and being able to bring theory and practice together in their work. These issues will be looked at in a conversation with: Jamer Hunt, Director, Master of Fine Arts in Transdisciplinary Design, Parsons The New School for DesignFiona Raby, Partner, Dunne & RabyModerated by Liliana Albertazzi, Architecture consultant, Intramuros; Professor and Researcher, Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme; Associate member, Chaire sur l’altéritéJamer Hunt, director of the Parsons MFA in Transdisciplinary Design, is founder of Big + Tall Design, which combines conceptual, collaborative, and communication design. He has written about design for Fast Company, Huffington Post and I.D. Magazine, which published his Manifesto for Post-Industrial Design. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Center for Design and the Editorial Board of Design and Culture. With the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), he collaborated on the symposiums Design and Elastic Mind and Headspace: On Scent as Design.Fiona Raby is a partner in Dunne & Raby, a professor of Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and a Reader in Design Interactions at the Royal College of Art in London. Dunne & Raby use design as a medium to stimulate discussion about the social, cultural and ethical implications of existing and emerging technologies. Their work has been exhibited at the MoMA and the Pompidou Centre; publications include Design Noir: The Secret Life of Electronic Objects (Princeton Architectural Press); Hertzian Tales (MIT Press) and Speculative Everything: Design, Fiction and Social Dreaming (MIT Press, November 2013).About Parsons ParisParsons The New School for Design is one of the world's leading art and design educational institutions. As chair, Frank was instrumental in crafting a compromise bill to stem the tide of home mortgage foreclosures, as well as the subsequent $550 billion rescue plan. He was co-author of the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act and led the passage of the Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights Act. In 1987, Frank became the first member of Congress to voluntarily come out as openly gay, and in 2012 he married his longtime partner Jim Ready, becoming the nation’s first congressman to enter into a same-sex marriage while in office. A major focus in lectures since leaving office, Barney Frank discusses why military spending can and must be reduced if we are to bring down the Federal deficit in a socially responsible way.Barney Frank will be joined for discussion by Robert Pollin, Professor of Economics and Co-Director of the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Pollin is a co-author of a recent report exposing significant faults in the 2010 Harvard research justifying austerity policies. (Ph.D., New School for Social Research, 1982).

Stars of Tomorrow: Free Outdoor Concert at Hudson River Park with New School Jazz Musicians! That's where architecture and design come in. Design sets expectations, influences moods, engenders feelings that are as much the part of the restaurant experience as where the ingredients are sourced and how the wine pairs. Good design adds to the comfort, satiety, and overall excitement of a great restaurant experience in a synergistic way.The Food Studies Program of the New School for Public Engagement is partnering with The James Beard Foundation (JBF) to launch a series of panel discussions titled Dining + Design: Conversations with Chefs and Architects on Creating the Ideal Dining Experience. This unique series will feature conversations with top toques and architects, highlighting the critical relationship between a restaurant’s culinary concepts and physical design in creating the ideal dining experience. This is the third panel discussion of the Dining + Design series. Making up for a history rife with controversy, slavery, and the exploitation of the developing world, coffee has become a major focus for Fair Trade. Coca-Cola, invented in 1886 as a cocaine-and-caffeine-laced nerve tonic and soda fountain beverage, is a much younger drink, but in its short history it has become as ubiquitous and controversial. At the moment, soft drinks are widely vilified as a major culprit in the obesity epidemic. Mark Pendergrast will explore this caffeinated history in an informative, entertaining, and challenging presentation. He is the author of For God, Country and Coca-Cola: The Definitive History of the Great American Soft Drink and the Company That Makes It and Uncommon Grounds: The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World. Moderated by New School faculty member, Andrew F. Smith.Sponsored by the Food Studies Program at The New School for Public Engagement.

Jazz In The Square Concert Series - Featuring Or Bareket

Jazz in the Square takes place every Tuesday and Thursday, June 11 through August 15 (except for July 4) from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. in the West Side Seating Area of Union Square Park.
