The Masters of Science in Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management is awarded for successful completion of a 42-credit course of study. The environmental policy and sustainability management program can be completed in two years of full-time study. Our classes are scheduled to accommodate working professionals allowing students the flexibility to earn their degree full-time or part-time.The program core focuses on familiarizing students with the relevant natural sciences, mastering targeted financial analytics and the policy and business dimensions of projected climate change. The core also offers an array of perspectives on organizational, environmental, and social ecology. Students supplement core learning with an area of concentration in either policy or management.Students complete the program with a capstone seminar, developing individual research- and practice-based projects in a collaborative and multiple-disciplinary learning environment.
Internships help students acquire first-hand knowledge and skills that complement their degree. Full-time students who enter the program without related prior work experience and those planning a career change are required to complete a noncredit professional internship (400–900 hours).
Current urban environmental issues in New York City and the region provide an exceptional laboratory for experiential learning. Milano students have access to many practice-based projects. For example, students from across The New School and Stevens Institute of Technology came together to compete in the U.S. Department of Energy 2011 Solar Decathlon designing and building the award-winning Empowerhouse. The story does not end there. The Empowerhouse team, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C., and the D.C. local government, took their “affordable green” concept beyond the competition designing and constructing the first passive house on site in the Deanwood neighborhood in Washington, D.C. This Empowerhouse collaboration is the recipient of the 2012 Mayor’s Sustainability Award.
