The degree of Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is awarded for successful completion of 30 credits, consisting of five core courses required of all students and five courses in the student's chosen concentration, either Teaching or Curriculum Development.
The New School's MA TESOL was designed with working adults in mind. Either concentration can be completed entirely online. The Teaching concentration can completed in a low-residency program that begins with an intensive 9–12-credit summer curriculum in New York City and is finished online. Full-time students (taking at least 9 credits every semester) working online can earn the master's degree in four academic terms (one and a half to two years). Students who begin their studies with the summer on-campus intensive can finish in three terms (one year). Part-time study is acceptable.
The graduate TESOL program is a 30-credit curriculum leading to the master of arts degree: 15 credits of core courses and 15 credits in a specific concentration. All courses carry three graduate credits. All students must take the five core courses. The other five courses, including the practicum or professional project, are taken in one of the concentrations.
