The degree of Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is awarded for successful completion of 30 credits, consisting of five core courses required of all students and five courses in the student's chosen concentration, either Teaching or Curriculum Development.
The New School's MA TESOL was designed with working adults in mind. Either the Teaching concentration or Curriculum Development concentration can be completed entirely online or online and on site. Full-time students (taking at least 9 credits every semester) working online can earn the master's degree in four academic terms (fifteen months). Part-time students (taking the maximum of 6 credits per semester) can earn the degree in 5 semesters (twenty months). Students can also earn 3-12 credits during the eight-week summer intensive at the Greenwich Village campus. The minimum amount of time needed to earn the degree is one year, which includes full time study and the summer on site intensive.
The graduate TESOL program is a 30-credit curriculum leading to the master of arts degree: 15 credits of core courses and 15 credits in a specific concentration. All courses carry between 1 and 3 graduate credits. All students must take the five core courses. The other five courses, including the practicum or professional project, are taken in one of the concentrations.
