    Brian McCarthy

    Brian McCarthy is a media theorist and urbanist. His research interests involve visual studies, discourses of urban development, and architecture.

    He holds a B.A. from Yale University, and an M.A. from Columbia University, where his research and writing focused on informal housing in Mumbai, architectural theory and social practice media.

    He has been involved with the experimental film and video community in New York City since 1999, having worked for experimental spaces such as Anthology Film Archives, the Filmmaker’s Coop, and EAI. He has also collaborated with 16Beaver Group, where he curated a four-part experimental film and video series exploring the intersections between political activism and experimental image-making practices.

    His work has been published in journals such as Rethinking Marxism and Shifter, and he recently participated in the AND AND AND platform on “Commoning in Kassel” at Documenta 13.

    He is currently working on a series of screenings and workshops on the theme of eviction and urban development in New York and Mumbai.
