Research Support

The Office of Research Support (ORS) works directly with faculty to determine what available funding opportunities match their research needs and priorities. ORS can navigate the many federal, foundation, and internal funding sources and funding search databases and create a prospectus of customized opportunities to keep you apprised of notable funding opportunities.

The ORS has developed resources and information to facilitate a funding search. We are also available to work directly with faculty and administrators to conduct customized funding searches based on specific funding needs and priorities.

The Office of Research Support (ORS) Pre-Award team supports faculty and administrators in the preparation of grant and fellowship applications, management of sponsored awards, development of non-disciplinary components of proposals, and enhancement of proposal competitiveness. We facilitate the internal proposal review and submission process, ensure adherence to sponsor guidelines and university policies, and ensure compliance with sponsor terms and conditions as well as university policies.

A detailed project budget and proposal narrative (and/or scope of work) are essential and required components of all sponsored project applications. Every external organization has different requirements in terms of a proposal’s content and format whether you are preparing a Letter of Intent/Inquiry (LOI), pre-proposal, scope of work and budget, or full proposal to submit to an external organization.

Upon request and with adequate lead time, ORS staff can provide informal feedback on proposal application materials prior to final internal routing and sign-off.

The Office of Research Support (ORS) Post-Award Team supports Principal Investigators and their research and/or creative teams as they pursue their funded projects. In partnership with PIs, college/school administrators, and central administrators, we support the policies and procedures that enable The New School to remain compliant with the expectations and requirements of our sponsors, in light of New School policies and procedures and federal regulatory guidelines.

PIs are responsible for both the fiscal oversight and technical management of the externally-funded project. The Post-Award team assists the PI in many aspects of oversight and management. Specifically, the Post-Award Team:

• Sets up the award in Workday and assigns the Worktags;

• Proactively works with PIs and their teams to anticipate future needs of the awards, such as travel, hiring, events, and major purchases;

• Creates shared task lists outlining important award deadlines;

• Ensures the timeliness of sponsor reporting guidelines;

• Prepares agreements between TNS, PI, and subrecipients;

• Prepares Quarterly Updates for the PI, Grant Accounting, and University Development and Alumni Relations Office (UDARO) to assure that grant spending follows Uniform Guidance Cost Principles of allowability, allocability, reasonableness, and consistency;

• Completes annual subrecipient monitoring;

• Helps the PI’s team distinguish between expenses that should be listed as Direct Costs, those that should be reimbursed through indirect cost recovery, and those that are not eligible for reimbursement;

• Works with the PI (and UDARO) to request extensions as needed; and

• Ensures the award is closed in a timely manner and helps the PIs and their teams transition to the next endeavor.

Responsible conduct of research (RCR) at The New School embodies research integrity, good stewardship of research, ethical research behavior, and the best practices of exceptional researchers. The Office of Research Support (ORS), in coordination with The New School's RCR Academy, offers policy, guidance, and RCR educational content to support university faculty, staff, and students involved in research.
