The New School's Equity for Children Hosts Two-Day Conference, "Urban Inequities and Children"

April 28 and 29 in New York City

Equity for Children at The New School hosts a two-day conference, "Urban Inequities and Children" on April 28 and 29.

NEW YORK, April 22, 2016—Equity for Children, a nonprofit organization based at The New School that advocates for the well-being and rights of children and adolescents, hosts a two-day conference, "Urban Inequities and Children", on April 28 and 29.

Advocates and experts will examine key issues between child poverty and inequality in cities, including identifying urban childhood inequities; how to gather, measure and translate evidence about this issue into action; and how to promote equity for all inhabitants by incorporating children’s voices into urban design.

“Over half the world’s population—including more than a billion children—now live in cities and towns," said Professor Alberto Minujin, founder and executive director of Equity for Children. "The connection between urbanization and poverty has led to local governments’ enacting public policies aimed to eliminate inequities. Child rights, though, are still frequently absent from the dialogue.”

He added: “The conference will address poverty and inequality measures that generate evidence about public policy impact, which will, in turn, help us identify further steps to improve childhood quality of life.”

The event will be hosted in two parts:

Conference speakers will include:
  • Cómo Vamos Mariana Alegre, Director (Lima) and Monica Villegas, Director (Bogota)

  • UNICEF David Anthony, Chief, Policy Advocacy Unit, Data, Research, and Policy

  • New York City Children’s Cabinet Benita Miller, Executive Director

  • Inter-American Development Bank Florencia Lopez Boo, Senior Social Protection Economist

  • Bernard van Leer Foundation Leonardo Yanez, Program Officer, Latin America

  • Equity for Children Alberto Minujin, Founder and Executive Director

The event is being held in partnership with the Center for New York City Affairs and with support from Fundación Corona, the Bernard Van Leer Foundation, the Global Urban Futures Project at The New School and the Milano School of International Affairs Management and Urban Policy. Additional organizations participating in panels during the conference include: ChildFund Alliance, Children’s Environmental Research Group (CERG) at the City University of New York, Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York, Comparative Research Programme on Poverty (CROP) at the University of Bergen, Norway, Global Urban Futures at The New School, ReadNYC/East Side House Settlement, Save the Children, and the UNICEF Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean.
