Faculty members at The New School are available for comment on the 2016 U.S. elections.

NEW YORK, October 19, 2016—Faculty experts at The New School, a progressive New York City university with academic programs in politics, policy, economics, international affairs and more, are available for comment on the upcoming U.S. elections.

Faculty members can speak on a range of issues, including the populist and fascist tone of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, U.S.-Russia relations, immigration and citizenship, economic and racial inequality, globalization, and presidential fashion choices.

They faculty members are:

  • Federico Finchelstein, Professor of History, is the author of five books on fascism, populism, Dirty Wars, the Holocaust, and Jewish history in Latin America and Europe.

Area of Expertise: The populist and fascist tone of Donald Trump’s campaign

  • Jeffrey Smith, Assistant Professor of Politics and Advocacy, is the author of What My Year Behind Bars Taught Me About America's Prison Crisis, and member of the Missouri Senate from 2006-2009 representing St. Louis.

Areas of Expertise: Criminal justice system, urban political economy, policy advocacy, the legislative process

  • Nina Khrushcheva, Professor of International Affairs, is a senior fellow at World Policy Institute and author of Imagining Nabokov: Russia Between Art and Politics and The Lost Khrushchev: A Journey Into the Gulag of the Russian Mind.

Areas of Expertise: America's relationship with Russia, Trump's praise of Putin and other dictators, propaganda

  • Hazel Clark, Professor of Design Studies and Fashion Studies, Research Chair of Fashion, and author of the forthcoming book, Fashion and Everyday Life, New York and London c1890-2010 with Cheryl Buckley.

Areas of Expertise: Fashion choices of presidential candidates, First Lady fashions, fashion and history

  • David Plotke, Professor of Politics, is the author of Democratic Breakup: From the Civil Rights Act to the End of the Democratic Order, among other books. He is currently teaching a class on the 2016 U.S. election.

Areas of Expertise: Immigration and citizenship, political and social movements, national political institutions

  • Sean Jacobs, Associate Professor of International Affairs, was born and grew up in apartheid South Africa, where he finished college before studying political science at Northwestern University on a Fulbright Scholarship. He is working on a book on the intersection of mass media, globalization, and liberal democracy in post-apartheid South Africa.

Areas of Expertise: International perceptions and responses to U.S. elections, media discourses about terrorism, globalization

  • Darrick Hamilton, Associate Professor of Economics and Urban Policy, is the president-elect of the National Economic Association (NEA) who has written extensively about socioeconomic stratification in education, marriage, wealth, homeownership, health, and labor market outcomes.

Areas of Expertise: Racial and ethnic disparity in the economy and healthcare

  • Maya Wiley, Vice President of Social Justice at The New School Henry Cohen Professor of Urban Policy and Management, is a civil rights attorney and policy advocate who has developed programs to transform structural racism in the United States. She is currently the chairperson of the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board.

  • Deva Woodly, Assistant Professor of Politics, author of The Politics of Common Sense: How Social Movements Use Public Discourse to Change Politics and Win Acceptance.
