Parsons festival 2016 celebrates the next generation of art and design leaders

Annual Festival Features Exhibitions and Sales of Student Work, a Conversation with Eileen Fisher, Parsons Benefit and Fashion Show, and More

May 5-23 at Galleries and Event Spaces Throughout New York City, including South Street Seaport, Participant Gallery, Milk Studios, and Brooklyn's Industry City

NEW YORK, April 27, 2016 — The New School’s Parsons School of Design presents Parsons Festival 2016, a celebration of the leading art and design school featuring exhibitions and sales of student work, and student-led presentations and symposia in a range of design disciplines.

The festival also features a conversation with fashion designer Eileen Fisher and caps off with the Parsons Benefit and Fashion Show honoring Beth Rudin DeWoody, Donna Karan, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Arianna Huffington.

The festival will be held May 5-23 at The New School’s Greenwich Village campus and at venues throughout New York City, including the Seaport Culture District's Downtown Design Festival, an arts and culture initiative hosted by the Howard Hughes Corporation featuring an exhibition of projects by Parsons students. The exhibition, "Impact!", launches with an Opening Night Party on Monday, May 9, 6-8 p.m.

Highlights of this year’s Parsons Festival, many of which are free and open to the public, include:

  • “Impact!” — An exhibition showcasing a range of projects by Parsons students. Projects include Design for Care, a collection of garments designed in collaboration with Tide that explore the way we launder, repair, alter and wear clothes; MasterCard x Parsons, a series of prototypes and design concepts that embed payment functionality in products and garments; Intel in Tech and Fashion, a collection of wearable tech prototypes incorporating the Intel Curie module that address user needs in areas such as health and self-expression; and Local Studio, Made in New York, products designed for New York City, made in New York City, and sold in New York City. Part of the Seaport Culture District's Downtown Design Festival. Opening night party on Monday, May 9, 6-8 p.m. On view May 9 through June 10.   • Parsons Benefit and Fashion Show — Parsons’s annual gala and showcase of work by Fashion Design BFA students. This year’s event honors Beth Rudin DeWoody, Donna Karan, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Arianna Huffington and is hosted by Andy Cohen. Monday, May 23, 6:30 pm (cocktails) and 9:30 pm (runway show). Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers.
  • Eileen Fisher in Conversation with Hazel Clark — A conversation between Eileen Fisher and Hazel Clark, research chair for Fashion at Parsons School of Design, on the fashion designer's life and work. Fisher and Clark will touch on a recent collaborative project between Parsons and EILEEN FISCHER's “Green Eileen” sustainability initiative. Tuesday, May 17, 5:30-7 p.m. Tishman Auditorium, 63 Fifth Avenue.
  • The Future Now — Works by students in Parsons' undergraduate and associate degree programs that engage critical social issues and community needs. On view May 9-20. Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, 66 Fifth Avenue.
  • Parsons at WantedDesign NYC — Exhibition of ceramic, wood, and metal furniture, and tabletop items by Product Design students displayed at WantedDesign. On view Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; Thursday through Monday, May 12-16, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Tuesday, May 17, 2 p.m.. Industry City, 274 36th St., Brooklyn.
  • I Can Because You Do — Exhibition of work by students in Parsons MFA Fine Arts program curated by Alhena Katsof. Opening reception: May 5, 6-9 p.m. On view May 6-14. Participant Inc., 253 E Houston St.
  • Parsons Story Pop-up Shop — A shop selling products by students in Parsons' Illustration, Printmaking, Product Design, and Fashion programs. Open May 17-20, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, 2 West 13 St.

Many of the works on view embody ​Parsons human­-centered approach to technology and commitment to confronting real­-world problems.

This year’s festival is once again part of NYCxDESIGN, a citywide initiative celebrating New York City’s contributions to and embrace of design. The 2016 festival lineup represents the breadth of Parsons graduate, undergraduate and pre-college offerings in all design fields: architecture, art and design history and theory, communication and graphic design, design strategies and management, design and technology, fashion design, fine arts, interior design, integrated and transdisciplinary design, lighting design, photography, product design and urban design

Parsons School of Design, which was recently named the number one art and design school in the United States by Top Universities, has been a pioneer in art and design education for more than a century.
