November 29, 2016 – New York, NY – Richard Kessler, Dean of Mannes and Executive Dean for the College of Performing Arts at The New School announced today the appointment of former principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Pink Baby Monster bandleader, Mark Gould, to the faculty at Mannes.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mark Gould to the faculty at Mannes. Mark is one of those rare artists who is at home across the spectrum of styles and genres of music and performing arts,” said Kessler. “As the former principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Mark brings a wealth of experience, musical depth, and technical mastery with him to Mannes. More than that, he brings his love of experiment, multi-disciplinary performance, and a provocative teaching and performing style that is always guaranteed to inspire students and turn heads.”

In addition to a trumpet studio at Mannes, Gould will engage in and lead a variety of special productions and projects, including a follow-up to the highly successful 21st century cabaret course, Inside the Monsters’ Studio. Gould will also be conducting the Spring edition of the critically acclaimed (Un)Silent Film Night series, where he will lead the College of Performing Arts Theater Orchestra in a live screening and performance of Charlie Chaplin’s original score to Gold Rush

Mark Gould is one of the best known trumpeters of his generation. He was principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra from 1974-2003 and has been on the faculty of The Juilliard School since 1982. He joined the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music in September 2004. He has been very active as a trumpet soloist and conductor, and has conducted and performed as a soloist with the Seattle Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Colorado Philharmonic, Buffalo Symphony, The Juilliard Wind Ensemble, The Waterloo Festival, The Caramoor Festival and the Vermont Mozart Festival Orchestra. He is the director of The New York Trumpet Ensemble and has recorded 6 albums with them. He has been a frequent guest with Speculum Musicae, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, The MET Chamber Ensemble, Empire Brass, Canadian Brass, Summit Brass, The Graham Ashton Brass Ensemble and Extension Ensemble. As principal trumpet of The Metropolitan Opera, he participated in over 40 “Live from Lincoln Center” performances on PBS and numerous audio recordings of operas and symphonic works under the direction of James Levine, among which were the Grammy Award winning recordings of The Ring of the Nibelung and Parsifal for Deutsche Grammophon.
