Lee Manovich to speak on data visualization and social media

"Visualizing Instagram Data: Selfies, Cities, and Protests"

Wednesday, March 30, 6-8 p.m. at The New School's Parsons School of Design

WHAT:

Dr. Lev Manovich, author of books on new media theory, director of Software Studies Initiative, and professor of computer science at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, gives a talk, "Visualizing Instagram Data: Selfies, Cities, and Protests" on Wednesday, March 30, 6-8 p.m. at The New School's University Center.

In his talk, which is hosted by the MS Data Visualization program at The New School's Parsons School of Design, Manovich will touch on:

  • The exploration of patterns in massive amounts of visual, user-generated content, including the billions of images and video on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter
  • The democratization of data mining, which will allows designers, artists and students without a computer science degree to research data on social media
  • Analyzing social media data without thinking about what is "typical" or "popular," or "outliers"
  • Using "big data" to question our assumptions about cultures and societies

Manovich will show a number of data visualization projects created in his lab, including recent work created for New York Public Library, MoMA and Google. The projects to be shown include:

  • Comparison of 2.3 million Instagram images from 13 global cities (phototrails.net)
  • Installation exploring Broadway street in NYC using 30 million data points and images (on-broadway.nyc)
  • An analysis of 1 million artworks from the largest network for “user-generated art” (deviantart.com).
  • His current work in progress—an analysis of 265 million images shared on Twitter worldwide between 2011-20

The event is hosted by MS Data Visualization, an interdisciplinary graduate program that teaches students design, statistics, and computer science to develop their critical abilities and facility for innovation in work settings in which data increasingly shapes opinion, policy, and decision making in all sectors.

WHO:

Dr. Lee Manovich is the author and editor of eight books, including "Data Drift," "Software Takes Command," "Soft Cinema: Navigating the Database," and "The Language of New Media," which was described as "the most suggestive and broad ranging media history since Marshall McLuhan." Manovich is a professor of computer science at City University of New York Graduate Center, and a director of the Software Studies Initiative, which works on the analysis and visualization of big cultural data. In 2013, Manovich appeared on the list of "25 People Shaping the Future of Design." In 2014, he was included in the list of "50 Most Interesting People Building the Future."
