The New School presents Bowie: A Tribute with Simon Critchley and Special Guests on Friday, February 12. The tribute in "sound + vision" to the late musician and artist David Bowie (1947-2016) will be led by Simon Critchley, author of Bowie (2014, OR Books) and Hans Jonas Professor of Philosophy at The New School for Social Research.
The event will feature a selection of Bowie music and videos, and a discussion on the meaning of his art in the light of his death. Special guests include singer Raquel Cion (singing 'Win' by David Bowie), New School Provost Tim Marshall, and psychoanalyst Jamieson Webster, who will speak on patients' reactions to Bowie's death. |
WHO: |
Simon Critchley is the author of more than a dozen books and Hans Jonas Professor of Philosophy at The New School for Social Research. He is the moderator of The Stone, a New York Times series featuring the writing of contemporary philosophers and other thinkers on issues both timely and timeless.
In Bowie (2014, OR Books), Critchley melds personal narratives of how Bowie lit up his dull life in southern England’s suburbs with philosophical forays into the way concepts of authenticity and identity are turned inside out in Bowie’s work. The book features illustrations by Eric Hanson.
Critchley first encountered David Bowie in the early 70s, when the singer appeared on Britain’s most-watched music show, Top of the Pops. His performance of “Starman” mesmerized Critchley: it was “so sexual, so knowing, so strange,” he says. Two days later, Critchley’s mother bought a copy of the single; she liked both the song and the performer’s bright orange hair (she had previously been a hairdresser). The seed of a lifelong love affair was thus planted in the mind of her son, aged 12.
