Academics explore 'The future of Scholarly Knowledge'

Presented by The Center for Public Scholarship at The New School

Thursday and Friday, October 13 and 14 at The New School in New York City

WHAT:

The Center for Public Scholarship presents the 35th Social Research conference, The Future of Scholarly Knowledge: Principles, Pressures, and Prospects.

What is twenty-first-century “scholarly knowledge”—and why do we care? Is there a place in contemporary society for pure research and intellectual investigation or must all research and education prove its worth?

Times have changed. Trust in the academy has eroded. Private gain wrestles with public good, and demands for accountability—cost-benefit analysis in the form of jobs, products, and competition on an international scale—are now the norm.

What does the future hold for scholarly knowledge and the people and institutions that traditionally produced it?

WHO:

David Bromwich, Sterling Professor of English at Yale University, speaks on Thursday, October 13.

A panel of experts including Rosalind Morris, Akeel Bilgrami and Arthur Lupia speak Friday, October 14.

Additional speakers include: Alan Ryan (University of Oxford), Rosalind Morris (Columbia), Steven Brint (University of California, Riverside), Arthur Lupia (University of Michagan), Richard Shweder (University of Chicago), Jeremiah Ostriker (Columbia), Wolfgang Rohe (Stiftung Mercator), Josh Greenberg (Sloan Foundation), and Daniel Kevles (Yale)
