role of latino voters in the 2016 election

"Politics and Policy: The Latino Vote and the 2016 US Presidential Election," a forum hosted by Ray Suarez, host of “Inside Story” on Al Jazeera America

Monday, Dec. 7, 7-9 p.m. at The New School in New York City

WHAT:

The New School's Center for New York City Affairs hosts Politics and Policy: The Latino Vote and The 2016 US Presidential Election, an in-depth discussion of the role of Latino voters in the 2016 presidential election, on Monday, Dec. 7.

Led by Ray Suarez, host of “Inside Story” on Al Jazeera America, the forum brings pollsters, political activists, and journalists from across the United States together to explore the growing influence of Latino voting blocs in swing states, as well as the challenges of mobilizing Latino voters in 2016.

The 2016 election could potentially see millions of first-time Latino voters— citizens who became naturalized since 2012 and young people who reached voting age in the past 4 years. Latino voters are widely credited with providing the margin of victory for Barack Obama in several states in the past two elections. But while Latinos are one of the fastest growing groups in the U.S., their participation in elections has historically lagged behind the national average.

Issues the panel will focus on include:

  • Naturalization and voting— some 8-million immigrants in the U.S. are eligible to apply for citizenship, but haven’t yet applied.
  • The role of technology in engaging Latino voters. Smart phone use is growing faster among Latinos than any other group in the U.S.  How are campaigns responding to this trend?
  • Issues that resonate with Latino voters, including immigration, to the economy, to climate change and the environment.
  • Presidential candidates with Latino roots or ties to Latino communities.

The event is organized by Feet in 2 Worlds, an award-winning journalism project focused on immigrants and immigration at the Center for New York City Affairs at The New School. It is part of Politics and Policy, a year-long series sponsored by the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy at The New School.
