Where The WIld Books Are

The New School hosts Where The Wild Books Are on April 18.

The New School presents its 2015 spring semester public programming in writing and literature. Since its founding in 1919, The New School has been one of New York City's best-known sites for readings, author interviews, and literature events with leading authors and thinkers.

Highlights include:

Grace Paley and the Disturbances of Man The New School presents a symposium on the life and work of legendary New York social activist, poet, short story writer, and feminist Grace Paley. The event includes a panel on her life and writings; readings by New School writing students; and a screening of Lilly Rivlin’s documentary, Grace Paley: Collected Shorts, followed by a conversation with the director. There will also be a screening of Peter Barton’s Women of ’69, Unboxed. The symposium concludes with a walking tour of historically and culturally charged sites from Paley’s lifetime in Greenwich Village. April 9 from 9 AM to 9 PM, and April 10 from 9 AM to 2 PM. Where the Wild Books Are Steven Guarnaccia, associate professor of illustration at The New School, and artist Etienne Delessert explore cultural trends and changes in the field of global children’s publishing and their impact on young readers. Historian and critic Leonard S. Marcus will give the keynote address, followed by presentations, a panel discussion with influential industry insiders, and a lively exchange on the ethical, commercial, and aesthetic dimensions surrounding picture books around the world. Book Launch: Classroom Wars: Language, Sex, and the Making of Modern Political Culture The New School for Social Research celebrates the release of Classroom Wars: Language, Sex, and the Making of Modern Political Culture (Oxford University Press) by Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, assistant professor of history at The New School. There will be discussions on Classroom Wars with professors Jeremy Varon and Claire Potter (The New School) and Professor Jonathan Zimmerman (New York University). April 20, from 6 PM to 8 PM. The Best Online Editor Susan Shapiro, bestselling author and professor of journalism at The New School, discusses the business side of writing with the editors of top online magazines including Diego Ribadeneria of The New York Times.
