The New School presents its 2015 spring semester public programming in Art, Media, and Design. Since its founding in 1919, The New School has been a hub for cutting-edge design, innovative technologies, and avant-garde artistic expression.

Highlights include:

The Fear of Art: 32nd Social Research Conference. A two-day, public conference in which artists, scholars, and museum directors discuss the power of art and the importance of advocating for art, artist, and freedom of expression. Artist Ai Wei Wei will give the keynote address via video link, addressing the censorship, imprisonment, and exile of artists. Speculation, Now Book Launch. Speculation, Now gathers the voices of artists, architects, designers, economists, scientists, and scholars of othernesswho reflect on topics such as the imaginary, notions of time and temporality, space and spatiality, and aspects of the economy.The editor of the book is anthropologistVyjayanthi Venuturupalli Rao, with curatorsPrem Krishnamurthy, founder of Project Projects design studio,andCarin Kuoni, director of the Vera List Center for Art and Politics. Dorothy H. Hirshon Residence: Panel on Collaboration in Interactive Cinema with Toni Dove. Toni Dove, Hirshon Artist-in-Residence at The New School, will discuss the dynamics involved in creating experimental media installations and performances. Designer Makers Panel. The New School’s School of Constructed Environments hosts a presentation and discussion with design entrepreneurs who choose the autonomy of designing, producing, and marketing their own designs. Inside (hi)STORIES / Charles Rice. The New School’s School of Constructed Environments hosts a lecture by Charles Rice, Professor of Architecture at the University of Technology Sydney, discussing how the vast atrium became an urban development strategy, and some of the ramifications of this way of developing cities. Gender Studies Feminist Technologies Signature Event: Wangechi Mutu. TheWomen’s Learning Partnership(WLP), in partnership with The New School’s Gender Studies program, presents new documentary film on the impact of the communications revolution on human rights in the 21stcentury. Hate Crimes in the Heartland Screening and Media Studies Info Session. Rachel Meyers, filmmaker, will discuss her groundbreakingdocumentary on the media’s coverage of hate crimes spanning 90 years inTulsa, Oklahoma. Sanctions and Divestments: Economic Weapons for Political and Social Change. The 33rd Social Research Conference explores how sanctions and divestments have been used to influence policies on nuclear disarmament, climate change, and human rights. Speakers include Aryeh Neier, President Emeritus of the Open Society Foundations, Richard Macrory, Professor of Environmental Law at University College London, Richard J. Goldstone, former Chairperson of the South African Standing Commission of Inquiry Regarding Public Violence and Intimidation, and Nina L. Khruscheva, Associate Professor at The New School and Senior Fellow at the World Policy Institute. Dorothy H. Hirshon Residence: Presentation of Toni Dove’s Work and Student Showcase. Toni Dove, Hirshon Artist-in-Residence, will present developments in her latest work and School of Media Studies graduate students will share projects and prototypes they created in class using Dove’s cinematic framework.
