NEW YORK AND PARIS (February 9, 2014) – Parsons Paris will launch a new Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design History and Theory. The program, which welcomes its first class in 2015, will provide college students an unparalleled opportunity for immersion in art and design history and studio practice, curatorial and French studies.

“There is only one Paris, and there is only one Parsons – and this exciting program offers students the full educational opportunities of both Parsons and its university The New School,” said Susan Taylor-Leduc, Dean of Parsons Paris. “With its breathtaking cultural patrimony, Paris is the perfect setting to prepare the next generation of art and design scholars with a rigorous liberal arts education.”

The bachelor’s degree in Art and Design History and Theory frames curatorial studies as community engagement, while taking advantage of Paris’s incomparable cultural heritage. The program connects students with the deep institutional relationships Parsons Paris has created over nearly a century as an influential presence in the city’s arts and design scene. Parsons Paris’ partnerships with Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Centre National des Arts Plastiques will provide students hands-on access to cutting-edge French and global art and design, as well as the historical works and documents necessary to contextualize them.

In their junior year, students will also have the opportunity to study in another great center of global culture at the New York campus. In New York, students may take advantage of a range of undergraduate offerings at The New School, with minors including anthropology, culture and media, interdisciplinary science, philosophy and sociology. Minors in French studies and curatorial studies can be completed in Paris.

"Parsons is celebrated in the international the design community for its commitment to providing future practitioners with a both a theoretical and practical approach to education in Art and Design," said program director Emmanuel Guy. "At Parsons Paris, history and theory are fully integrated with Parsons’ studio culture and community of practitioners. This is what makes our Paris-based undergraduate program absolutely unique."

The bachelor’s program is led by noted curator and author Emmanuel Guy, a graduate of the legendary Ecole Normale Supérieure. Guy’s academic work on Paris’ epoch-defining cultural and political scene in the 60’s includes a recent exhibition examining Guy Debord and the Situationist movement. Guy is joined by a faculty representing a wide range of disciplines, including early modern art history experts Christine Baltay and Stephanie Nadalo, and 20th century design historian and journalist Rebecca Cavanaugh, fashion historians Marco Pecorari and Emilie Hammen, photography historian Lorraine Audric, new media art specialist Dominique Moulon, and historian of art and economics Sophie Cras.

Courses will be offered at Parsons Paris’ new academic center in the heart of the city at 45 Rue Saint-Roch. The historic building, reopened in 2013 as Parsons Paris’ campus after an state-of-the-art renovation. Click here to learn more about the new Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design History and Theory.
