The International Attachment Conference will take place at The New School’s University Center, Aug. 6-8, 2015

New York, NY (July 29, 2015)The New School For Social Research, The Center for Attachment Research and The Society for Emotion and Attachment Studies present the 7th International Attachment Conference, a three-day event designed to explore the links between adverse childhood experiences and later problematic health outcomes.

Held every two years since 2003 in a different global city, the conference will take place this year at The New School’s Tishman Auditorium, 65 Fifth Ave., New York City. It is the first time the conference has been held outside of Europe.

The three-day event will bring together 600 scholars, students, and mental health professionals from 24 countries, representing current advances in developmental, clinical, and social psychology, neuroscience, nursing, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and allied disciplines.

“Unifying this diverse gathering is in an interest in the fundamental importance of close personal relationships, the early foundation of which is a secure and responsive caregiver helping an infant to regulate his or her arousal and distress,” said Howard Steele, professor of Psychology and co-director of Center for Attachment.

The themes of each day are Adverse Childhood Experiences and Health (Aug. 6), Early Childhood & Parental Sensitivity (Aug. 7), and Attachment Across the Lifespan (Aug. 8). Evening entertainment on Aug. 6 will include a sparkling reception and live jazz, followed by a one-man show performed by Jerry Finkelstein, the New School’s director of Counseling Services.

Speakers include Beatrice Beebe (Columbia University), Jude Cassidy (University of Maryland), Jim Coan (University of Virginia), Shanta Rishi Dube (Georgia State University), Marinus van IJzendoorn, Judi Mesman (Leiden University) and Nim Totteham (Columbia University).
