Mark Strand will celebrate a lifetime of literary achievement at The New School on October 9.

The New School presents its 2014 fall semester public programming in writing and literature. Since its founding in 1919, The New School has been one of New York City's best-known sites for readings, author interviews, and literature events with leading authors and thinkers.

Highlights include:

bell hooks will continue her longstanding relationship with Eugene Lang Liberal Arts College with a residency this semester, including a series of public dialogues exploring issues of race, gender, class, feminism, and LGBTQ issues. October 3 through October 10. Location and appearance details TBD.

A tribute to Mark Strand, hosted by The School of Writing. Writing Faculty David Lehman and Honor Moore, along with noted poets including Mary Jo Salter, Charles Simic, David Lehman, and Jorie Graham, will celebrate Strand on the ocasion of his 80th birthday. October 9 at 7 PM. The Auditorium at 66 W. 12th Street.

The Marquis: Lafayette Reconsidered Discussion and Reading. Laura Auricchio, Dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies at The New School for Public Engagement, will celebrate book release for her latest publication, The Marquis: Lafayette Reconsidered, forthcoming from Knopf. October 22 at 6 PM. Teresa Lang Community and Student Center, 55 W. 13th Street.

The 2014 National Book Awards Reading will again bring the nation's most acclaimed authors to The New School. Longlist - and readers - announced next month. November 18 at 7 PM. The Auditorium at 66 W. 12th Street.

Innovative & Immersive Literature Symposium, a series of lectures, readings, and presentations about the innovative ways that poets, writers, artists, filmmakers, and technology experts are pushing how readers interact and experience literature. December 4 and 5 at 6:30 PM. Teresa Lang Community and Student Center, 55 W. 13th Street.
