The annualParsons Festival is again an official NYCxDESIGN partner, and features installations, exhibitions and events taking place at Wanted Design, the Collective 2 Design Fair, and the Parsons Greenwich Village campus. Diane Von Furstenberg: It’s a Wrap! 40 Years of the Wrap Dress

In 1974, Diane von Furstenberg introduced a modern design classic into the American consciousness: the wrap dress. The garment defined the 1970s, and outfitted a generation of women seeking (and achieving) professional, personal, and sexual independence. This conversation between Ms. von Furstenberg, the celebrated fashion designer and President of the Council of Fashion Designer of America (CFDA), and Professor Hazel Clark, Research Chair of Fashion at Parsons, marks 40 years of the wrap dress, and discusses the ways in which American fashion design has changed since 1974 as well as the past and future of this singular look.

Students in Parsons’ BFA Product Design program engaged in a spring studio challenge from Areaware, a Brooklyn-based producer of everyday objects. Students were tasked to design a prototype for an inexpensive, point-of-purchase gift item that fits within the current Areaware product line, with a retail cost of below $30. Finalists will be on display at Wanted Design. The winning designs for these “impulse buy” items will be announced at the event’s opening reception and sold on Areaware.com, with proceeds going to charity.
