NEW YORK (November 19) -- The New York String Orchestra, an ensemble of exceptional young players from around the world, returns to Carnegie Hall this holiday season for its two annual concerts conducted by Artistic Director Jaime Laredo and presented by Carnegie Hall.

Over the past 45 years, the orchestra’s annual appearances each December have become a Carnegie Hall tradition and are the culmination of Mannes College The New School for Music's 10-day New York String Orchestra Seminar, a nationally-acclaimed pre-professional training program for highly gifted 16 to 23-year-old classical artists. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma, one of many renowned alumni who attended the workshop as a teenager, has called it “one of the defining moments” of his career.

On Wednesday, December 24 at 7:00 p.m., the orchestra performs an all-Mozart program including the overture to The Impressario, the Oboe Concerto in C Major, K. 314 featuring Liang Wang, and Symphony No. 39 in E-flat Major, K. 543.  The second program, on Sunday, December 28 at 2:00 p.m., includes Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48, Barber’s Violin Concerto, featuring Augustin Hadelich, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68

In the New York String Orchestra Seminar's 45-year history, there has never been an application fee, and all those invited to participate receive full scholarships to this acclaimed national program. This season, 440 students applied to the Seminar; the sixty-one accepted represent 20 states and 9 countries.  Thanks to generous host institutions the Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Institute of Music, Colburn Conservatory (Los Angeles, CA), Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY), the New England Conservatory (Boston, MA), and the Shepherd School of Music (Houston, TX), and of course at our own New School (New York, NY) auditions were held in seven cities across the country—a means of giving as many students as possible the chance to audition without incurring travel costs. The sixty-one invited students have all confirmed their participation and in just a few weeks, they will travel to New York from across the nation and world to rehearse and perform together as the 45th Anniversary New York String Orchestra.

For over five decades, violinist Jaime Laredo has excelled in the roles of violinist, conductor, recitalist, and chamber musician. Since his orchestral debut at the age of 11 with the San Francisco Symphony, Mr. Laredo has won the admiration and respect of audiences, critics, and fellow musicians. He has been continually engaged by all of America’s major orchestras, including those of Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York, and Philadelphia, with such conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, and Leonard Slatkin.  Abroad, Mr. Laredo has performed as soloist and conductor with the London Symphony, BBC Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. For over 30 years, Mr. Laredo has interwoven solo and conducting dates with the schedule of the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson trio, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2007, and his commitment to educating the next generation of musicians.  In addition to leading the New York String Orchestra, Mr. Laredo is Music Director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Director of the 92nd Street Y’s Chamber Music Series, and guides the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. Mr. Laredo has been a principal figure at the Marlboro Music and Aspen Music Festivals and is on the faculty of the Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University. Mr. Laredo first performed as a soloist with the New York String Orchestra in 197. In 1993, Mr. Laredo, Mr. Schneider's personal choice for successor, became artistic director and conductor of the seminar.

In preparation for the concerts at Carnegie Hall, the young musicians will have the opportunity to rehearse with Mr. Laredo and renowned soloists Liang Wang, oboe and Augustin Hadelich, violin, as well as take part in chamber music workshops with celebrated artists including members of the Juilliard, Orion, and Guarneri String Quartets.  This year’s faculty includes bassists Peter Lloyd* and Kurt Muroki*; bassoonist Frank Morelli; cellists Bonnie Hampton, Sharon Robinson, clarinetist Anthony McGill*, flutist Bart Feller*; oboist Linda Strommen*; horn player Michelle Baker; violinists Pamela Frank*, Ida Kavafian, Cho-Liang Lin*, Daniel Phillips*, Todd Phillips*, Sylvia Rosenberg, Stephen Shipps*, and Hiroko Yajima; violists Samuel Rhodes, Michael Tree, and Steven Tenenbom*.
