Stories. We understand our world by telling stories that involve people, places, and things—nothing less than people and design. This spring, a two-day symposium, organized by the MA program in Design Studies at Parsons The New School for Design, will explore the wide variety of plot lines that run through and across design.  A distinguished interdisciplinary group of design scholars, critics, and professionals will share specific stories that are opening up new opportunities for design today.  The conference, Narratives and Design Studies: A Task of Translation, will be held March 7 – 8.

Poet, writer, and Columbia University professor Phillip Lopate will set the tone of the event with a keynote on Narratives of Place.  The symposium’s five sessions—on history, political power, social engagement, technology, and gender—will be led a scholars and practitioners from the realms of literature, design, architecture, engineering, sociology, urbanism, and social entrepreneurship.  Included among them are:
