The School of Media Studies at The New School was awarded a second 2014 NEH Grant for "AIDS Quilt Touch."

NEW YORK, Dec. 15, 201- The School of Media Studies at The New School is pleased to announce that it was awarded a Digital Projects for the Public Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for “Narrative Threads: The Creation of Digital Memorialization Applications for the AIDS Memorial Quilt.” This is the second NEH grant awarded in 2014 for the project.

AIDS Quilt Touch explores the use of narrative to provide context about the cultural and historical significance of the AIDS Quilt. Funding will support the creation of an interactive multi-media user-experience that features stories about Quilt panels. These narratives will focus on themes such as: AIDS and Activism, AIDS and Cultural Memory, and AIDS and Women.

The $30,000 grant from the NEH will support collaboration among research designers from the School of Media Studies and the Digital Studio for Public Arts and Humanities at the University of Iowa. This funding builds upon a $321,872 NEH Digital Humanities Implementation Grant awarded this past July for enhancing digital experiences for AIDS Quilt Touch, an interactive media platform that enables the public to search and browse the Quilt on mobile devices.

The National Endowment for the Humanities supports research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities by funding top-rated competitive, peer-reviewed proposals examined by panels of independent, external reviewers. At an annual cost of about 50 cents per capita, NEH brings high-quality historical and cultural experiences to large and diverse audiences in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and five territories.
