NEW YORK, Nov. 21, 2014- Never before have there been more opportunities and tools for writers and poets to experiment, engage, and interact with their readers. Over the course of two days, experts and artists on the leading edge of new literature will discuss the future of the craft during the inaugural Innovative and Immersive Literature Symposium.

Hosted by the MFA in Creative Writing Program at The New School, the symposium will feature today’s most innovative and revolutionary authors, poets, journalists and multimedia producers in conversation about the effects of technology on traditional literature, and the new ways readers engage with and experience storytelling and the written word.

On December 4, panelists include Julie Buntin, Director of Programs and Strategic Outreach at The Council of Literary Magazines and Presses; Illya Szilak, writer of multimedia novels and a practicing physician; Andy Hunter, founder of Electric Literature and the President of Black Balloon Publishing; and Flavia Rocha, Brazilian poet and journalist and editor-in-chief for Rattapallax. December 5 will feature readings and presentations by Matthea Harvey, author of Sad Little Breathing Machine and Pity the Bathtub Its Forced Embrace of the Human Form; Rick Moody, author of Garden State and winner of the 1991 Editor’s Choice Award from the Pushcart Press; media artist Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky, experimental artist Marcio-André, Ram Devineni, filmmaker, publisher and founder of Rattapallax Films and magazine; and music producer and composer Rene Veron.

“The MFA in Creative Writing Program is distinguished by our longstanding focus on new and challenging voices,” said Luis Jaramillo, director of the MFA program. “Through innovative coursework and hands-on experiences, our prose writers and poets are experimenting with the intersection of literature and technology, helping to determine the direction of literature in the 21 century.”

Held at the Theresa Lang Community and Student Center at 55 West 12 Street, the event is free and open to the public. Members of the media please RSVP to Kasia Broussalian, [email protected].
