On Wednesday January 15th, Make Music New York inaugurates a new series called Make Music Monthly, featuring conversations with musical luminaries recorded live at the Cornelia Street Cafe in Greenwich Village. This series is co-presented with the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

On the third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 pm, Make Music Monthly will invite a noted musical authority to delve deeply into the meaning and craft of music-making, with recorded or live musical examples. Hosted by Make Music New York founder Aaron Friedman, the discussion will be recorded and published as a podcast available on the Make Music New York and New School websites.

Just like the artists who enliven Make Music New York’s annual solstice celebrations, guests for Make Music Monthly will range across the spectrum of musical expression.

On January 15th, jazz historian and composer Gunther Schuller speaks about Charles Mingus’s monumental “Epitaph,” 25 years after he conducted the work’s world premiere.

On February 19th, virtuoso tabla player Samir Chatterjee discusses music in Afghanistan before, during, and after the Taliban’s nationwide ban on music, and describes his own travels in the country and efforts to restart musical life.

On March 19th, sonic branding expert Wilson Brown describes the world of commercial music, and his work to give a signature sound to clients such as General Mills, Mountain Dew, and the Partnership for a Healthier America.

Watch this space for news of future guests. Make Music Monthly will not take place in June or December, in deference to Make Music New York’s flagship event on June 21 and the Make Music Winter parades on December 21.

All conversations begin at 6:00pm, downstairs at the Cornelia Street Cafe, 29 Cornelia Street, New York NY. Although there is no cover charge, each event has a $8 food/drink minimum. Further information on Make Music Monthly is available at www.makemusicny.org.
