In 1974, Diane von Furstenberg introduced a modern design classic into the American consciousness: the wrap dress. The garment defined the 1970s, and outfitted a generation of women seeking (and achieving) professional, personal, and sexual independence. This conversation between Ms. von Furstenberg, the celebrated fashion designer and President of the Council of Fashion Designer of America (CFDA), and Professor Hazel Clark, Research Chair of Fashion at Parsons, marks 40 years of the wrap dress, and discusses the ways in which American fashion design has changed since 1974 as well as the past and future of this singular look.
