Action Cities

Medellin, Colombia
April 3 to 13, 2014

NEW YORK - March 21, 2014 -- This April, The Design and Urban Ecologies program at Parsons The New School for Design presents a radical re-imagining of the production of the world’s urban centers. This exhibition, named Action Cities, will be held during the World Urban Forum in Medellin, Colombia, at Medellin’s Museum of Modern Art (MAMM) from April 3 to 15. Curated in conjunction with the Center for Urban Ecologies at The University of California, San Diego and the Center for Urban and Environmental Studies of EAFIT University (urbam), it will feature a week of discussions highlighting alternate models of urban development.

“What’s in vogue today is a very capitalist, corporatist model of development,” said Miguel Robles-Duran, faculty member at Parsons and organizer of Action Cities. “What we want to show is that other models of doing cities still exist; models that empower the great majority of people, rather than just assisting them.”

Action Cities will emphasize how processes for change and relations between different agents and institutions take place. Further, it will examine how these processes can be used to create and build up confidence, hope, and social justice. It will point out how these processes are able to give value to and take value from local dynamics in a responsible approach in a rapidly changing context of high social pressure, led by a globalizing and homogenizing international trade policy.

The key feature of Action Cities will be a “Café Bar” inside MAMM that will work conceptually as a hub, a place where people come and go, meet, and express their ideas according to a fixed and an open program. Invited participants include:

Centro de Desarrollo Cultural de Moravia – Medellín
Political ecuator – San Diego
