Charles Valentin Alkan: His Life and Music
Concert and Lecture, Monday, November 18, 8 p.m.

"One of the five greatest composers for the piano since Beethoven"
- Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924)

WHAT:

A concert of the work of Charles Valentin Alkan (1813-1888), a remarkable and enigmatic French composer and virtuoso pianist (and a friend and rival of Chopin and Liszt). In honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Alkan this year, concerts are being held around the world. Many of the works played at this event will be New York premieres. Donald Wagner, a leading authority on Alkan, will offer comments and context on Alkan's life and music.

A wide range of Charles Valentin Alkan’s music, including solo piano, chamber, concerted, and vocal works will be performed by students from Mannes College The New School for Music. This is the only New York City presentation of Alkan’s music on the occasion of this anniversary. Fifty years ago, New York was the site of an event that galvanized the modern revival of interest in Alkan.
