NEW YORK, January 30, 2012—The New School, including Parsons The New School for Design and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, has announced its spring art and design programming.

The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons kicks off its spring programming with three new exhibitions exploring notions of community and belonging. Where Do We Migrate To (Feb. 3-Apr. 15) addresses contemporary issues of migration, displacement and exile through the work of 19 artists and collectives, including Acconci Studio, Svetlana Boym, and Adrian Piper. Layered SPURA (through Feb. 25) documents four years of community work at the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area, an embattled neighborhood on Manhattan's Lower East Side that has been slated for redevelopment for decades, but remains largely unused. Thingness of Energy: Jamie Kruse (Feb. 2-Apr. 24), organized by the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, is a mixed-media installation by Jamie Kruse of Smudge Studio, which invites audiences to consider and directly experience the material realities of energy.
To celebrate the upcoming launch two new graduate programs focused on urban transformation, Parsons welcomes urban artists, activists and planners from across the globe through the lecture series In the Urban Crisis. Highlights from the series include discussions with lawyer and Occupy Wall Street activist Paula Z. Segal (Feb. 23), professor and urban advocate Andrew Ross (Apr. 5), artist Jeanne van Heeswijk (Apr. 26), sociologist Pelin Tam (May 3), and more.
The Visiting Artist Lecture Series presented by the School of Art, Media and Technology at Parsons will feature K8 Hardy (Feb. 1), Imani Brown and Noah Fischer of Occupy Museums (Feb. 8), Mickalene Thomas (Feb. 29), Ryan McGinness (March 28) and Janine Antoni (Apr. 25). A number of other notable artists and designers will deliver talks and lectures, including MoMA curator Barry Bergdoll, the as the keynote speaker of the conference Design History Revolution (Apr. 27-28); Glenn Pushelberg and George Yabu of interior design firm Yabu Pushelberg (Feb. 9); and Dror Benshetrit (Apr. 3), principal of Studio Dror.
Vera List Center for Art and Politics will partner with Paper Tiger Television for Being the Media: Designing a New Rrradical Media (Feb 10-11), a look at the past, present, and future of radical media. Featured speakers include Center for Media Justice's Malkia Cyril and the Yes Lab's Andy Bichlbaum.
