NEW YORK, March 30, 2012—The New School, including Parsons The New School for Design and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, has announced its April-May art and design public programming.

Parsons invites the public to preview the next generation of art and design leaders at the Parsons Festival (May 5-20), a series of exhibitions, public programs, interactive installations, gallery openings, workshops, and special events featuring cutting-edge work by the Parsons community.

The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center (SJDC) at Parsons explores notions of community and belonging with Where Do We Migrate To (through Apr. 15), an exhibition addressing contemporary issues of migration, displacement and exile through the work of 19 artists and collectives, including Acconci Studio, Svetlana Boym, and Adrian Piper. Also on view at the SJDC is #searchunderoccupy (through Apr. 1), an exhibition structured as a living archive of Occupy Wall Street; and Thingness of Energy: Jamie Kruse (through Apr. 24) a mixed-media installation exploring the material qualities of energy by Jamie Kruse of Smudge Studio.

The School of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons will showcase Spanish films created during times of repressive political and social conditions with Spain's Film Masters: Beyond Buñuel and Almodóvar. Upcoming screenings include The Hunt (Mar. 30) and The Spirit of the Beehive (Apr. 6).

To celebrate the upcoming launch two new graduate programs focused on urban transformation, Parsons welcomes urban artists, activists and planners from across the globe through the lecture series In the Urban Crisis. Highlights from the series include discussions with urban advocate Andrew Ross (Apr. 5), geographer Erik Swyngedouw (Apr. 19), artist Jeanne van Heeswijk (Apr. 26), sociologist Pelin Tam (May 3), and more.

The Visiting Artist Lecture Series presented by the School of Art, Media and Technology at Parsons will feature Nicole Awai (Apr 4.), Alan Michelson (Apr. 11), Malik Gaines (Apr. 18), and Janine Antoni (Apr. 25). A number of other notable artists and designers will deliver talks and lectures, including MoMA curator Barry Bergdoll, the as the keynote speaker of the conference Design History Revolution (Apr. 27-28); Dror Benshetrit (Apr. 3), principal of Studio Dror; and Robin Petravic and Catherine Bailey of Heath Ceramics (April 6).
