REWIND: A MUSICAL MEDITATION ON SOUTH AFRICA'S DEMOCRATIC TRANSITION
DOCUMENTARY'S AMERICAN PREMIERE

Presented by The New School's Transregional Center for Democratic Studies
6 P.M. to 8 P.M., Thursday, November 3, 2011

WHAT: In its effort to ensure a peaceful transition to democracy, South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) heard the testimony of 21,000 victims and 7,000 perpetrators. To mark the TRC's tenth anniversary in 2004, composer Philip Miller (Yizo Yizo, Heartlines, Kentridge's Nine Drawings for Projection and Noyce's Catch a Fire) created Rewind: A Cantata for Voice, Tape and Testimony.

This extraordinary composition is explored in Rewind, South African filmmaker Liza Key's poetic documentary about the creation of Miller's cantata and the TRC hearings upon which it is based. Rewind uses Miller's composition as a vehicle to tell the human stories behind the shards of TRC testimony integrated into Miller's work.

Rewind's American premiere is presented in anticipation of the centennial of the African National Congress by The New School's Transregional Center for Democratic Studies, in collaboration with the South African Consulate General in New York and the Center for Public Scholarship.

WHO: David Van Zandt, President of The New School will introduce the evening. The film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring:

Jacob Dlamini, Doctoral Student in History, Yale University and South African history expert
Graeme Simpson, Lecturer, Columbia University; South African political activist
Sean Jacobs, Assistant Professor, International Affairs at The New School; coeditor of Thabo Mbeki's World: The Politics and Ideology of the South African President

WHERE: Tishman Auditorium, Alvin Johnson/J. M. Kaplan Hall, 66 West 12th Street
