"Since its founding 25 years ago, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music has sought inspiration from the world outside the classroom," said director Martin Mueller. "That's why this calendar of extraordinary performances is so important to us. Our New York City audiences are a fundamental part of our mission to protect the jazz community's traditions and push the limits of music education."
On September 19th, the Highline Ballroom will host The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music's 25th Anniversary Alumni Gala. The celebration, which is open to the public, will feature performances by some The New School's most exciting jazz alumni: The Frank LoCrasto Group, Jesse Boykins III and The Beauty Created, and the Becca Stevens Band. In addition, Marcus Strickland will lead an Alumni All-Star Band, formed especially for the occasion. A second homecoming event will welcome acclaimed pianist and New School alumnus Brad Mehldau and saxophonist Josh Redman to The New School's Tishman Auditorium (Oct. 15) for a collaborative performance. The Jazz Museum of Harlem's Harlem Speaks series will pay tribute to New School Jazz's silver anniversary with four interviews with some of the school's longest-serving and most influential faculty, including flautist Jane Ira Bloom (Sep. 19), pianist George Cables (Oct. 6), saxophonist Billy Harper (Nov. 3) and pianist Hal Galper (Dec. 1).
In addition, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music community will also perform in two ongoing concert series: Jazz in the Square, a series of lunchtime concerts in Union Square Park, and Jazz Presents, which features performances by faculty, students and special guests.
