The New School and UNICEF Present Adolescent Girls as the Cornerstone
Of Society: Building Evidence and Policies for Inclusive Societies

First Conference of Its Kind Bringing Together International Organizations, NGOS, Academics, and Practitioners for a Broad Vision of Adolescent Girls
As Agents of Change in Developing Countries

April 26-28

WHAT:

Adolescent girls—nearly 500 million living in developing countries—will be the focus of the 5th international conference, organized by The New School Graduate Program in International Affairs and UNICEF, that will bring together more than 200 people from 30 organizations and agencies representing over 20 countries to promote international discussion around engaging and empowering adolescent girls to meet the crucial global issues of the 21st century—from the impact of climate change to rapidly emerging technologies and innovations.

Current discussion about adolescent girls revolves around sexual and reproductive health issues such as early marriage, sex trafficking, genital mutilation, early pregnancy, and rape. While these remain critical issues, this conference, Adolescent Girls as the Cornerstone of Society: Building Evidence and Policies for Inclusive Societies, will take a broader look at global trends and discuss programs and policies that consider adolescent girls as central to developing strategies in addressing today’s global challenges.

The New School for General Studies, the founding division of The New School, has been a leader in adult education since the early twentieth century. Independent-minded scholars, including historian Charles Beard and philosopher John Dewey, founded The New School in 1919 as a place where social criticism and modern arts could flourish. From its roots in the social sciences, the school has grown to encompass hundreds of courses in a variety of disciplines, as well as lecture series, seminars and public programs. Today, the school continues to honor its mission to serve the intellectual, cultural, artistic, and professional needs and interests of adult students by offering an innovative education to a growing number of undergraduates and adult learners.
