WHAT:

The Mannes Opera of Mannes College The New School for Music, conducted by Joseph Colaneri, will present a fully staged production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Così fan tutte featuring two international casts of artists from The Mannes Opera with The Mannes Orchestra. The opera will be performed in the original Italian.  Among the cast for Così will be Mannes undergraduate Nadine Sierra, a winner of the 2009 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions—at age 20, the youngest winner in a generation—and Mannes graduate student Hyo Na Kim, a finalist in the 2010 Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions.

“The selection of this particular opera underlines our mission to provide our students with in-depth study and performance opportunities from the canonic operatic repertory,” said Colaneri. “Così fan tutte gives the young artists of The Mannes Opera a valuable encounter with the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of the greatest composers of opera, and allows them to study and perform roles which are eminently suited for young voices.”

Joseph Colaneri, an acclaimed conductor of opera, oratorio, and symphonic works, has been artistic director of The Mannes Opera since 1998. He is also now in his 13th season as a member of the conducting roster of the Metropolitan Opera. The New York Times has praised The Mannes Opera under Maestro Colaneri’s leadership, noting that “the program has earned a stellar reputation for the quality of its presentations and the excellence of its student singers.” Regina Resnik, Master Artist-In-Residence at Mannes, coached the student performers of Così fan tutte in intensive sessions. Production professionals include Laura Alley (stage director), Roger Hanna (set designer), Helen E. Rodgers (costume designer), Jeff Davis (lighting designer), and Sevrin Anne Mason (makeup and wig designer).

The Mannes Opera’s production of Così fan tutte is dedicated to Julius Rudel, one of the world’s most renowned and admired conductors of opera.  Rudel, among Mannes’s most eminent alumni, emigrated at age 17 from Austria to the United States, and studied conducting at Mannes with Carl Bamberger. After graduating in 1943, he joined the New York City Opera where he forged a legendary 35-year career. Rudel will accept the dedication in person at the May 6 opening performance.

about:

Così fan tutte (literally “So Do They All” and often translated as “Women Are Like That”) was Mozart’s  third and last collaboration with Lorenzo Da Ponte, who was also librettist for Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni. Così fan tutte is at once an entertaining, satirical, romantic comedy and a profound and poignant exploration of the mysteries of the human heart. Premiered in Vienna in January 1790 and set in contemporary Naples, the twists and turns of its famously clever plot involves a series of contretemps between four attractive and idealistic young lovers, a crafty maidservant, and a jaded man of the world.  “The perfect opera,” termed by some, contains some of Mozart’s most beautiful music, yet the social and moral questions raised are still controversial.
