NEW YORK, February 1, 2010—The New School announces its spring 2010 ongoing series of President’s Forums and panel discussions, providing opportunities to take part in conversations on some of the burning issues of the day with ground-breaking thinkers in business, politics, law, journalism, and the arts. A center of academic excellence, The New School offers the perfect setting for lively discourse with President Bob Kerrey and notable guests. 

The first event of the series, Women & Power: Paths to Prominence from Antiquity to the Present, will take place on Monday, February 22 at 6:00 p.m. in the Theresa Lang Community and Student Center at 55 West 13th Street, 2nd floor. New School President Bob Kerrey will moderate a distinguished panel exploring how highly accomplished women—from ancient times to the modern era—have grappled with the critical decisions, personal and professional crises, and public and private conflicts that often accompany feminine power and authority. The panelists are Hon. Judith S. Kaye, former chief judge, New York State Court of Appeals; of counsel, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP; Letty Cottin Pogrebin, writer; co-founding editor, Ms. Magazine; co-founder, National Women’s Political Caucus; former president, Authors Guild; Brooksley E. Born, retired partner, Arnold & Porter LLP; former chair, U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission; Bevis Longstreth, New School trustee; author, Return of the Shade; former commissioner, Securities and Exchange Commission; former senior partner, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP; former adjunct professor, Columbia Law School; and Lisa Dierbeck, author, One Pill Makes You Smaller; contributor to the Boston Globe; O, the Oprah Magazine; and Time Out New York.

New School President Bob Kerrey talks one-on-one with New York Times reporter Andrea Elliot, a leading chronicler of Muslim life in America who received the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing for a series of articles on Sheik Reda Shata, an Egyptian-born imam living in Brooklyn who moved there one year after the September 11 attacks. Elliott has explored the challenges faced by Muslim men and women serving in the American military and conflicts between Muslim immigrants and African-American converts to Islam. In her work overseas, she broke new ground in the study of terrorism, illuminating how young Muslim men are being drawn into violent conflict with the West.

New School President Bob Kerrey takes part in an informal discussion with former Florida governor and U.S. senator Bob Graham. Graham is the author of America, the Owner’s Manual: Making Government Work for You (CQ Press, 2009) and founder of the Graham Center for Public Service at the University of Florida. The evening will focus on Senator Graham’s distinguished career in government and his perspectives on today’s critical issues, including national security and ways ordinary citizens can affect government policy.
