Mannes college the new school for music announces
fall 2010 classical music performances and events

NEW YORK, September 17, 2010, Mannes College The New School for Music presents numerous events of special interest.

Highlights of this season include two free concerts by the Mannes Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall, both conducted by David Hayes, Director of Orchestral and Conducting Studies. The first concert, on October 12, features Brahms: Tragic Overture; R. Strauss: Dance of the Seven Veils from Salome; and Dvorak: Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” The second on November 4 features Ives: Three Places in New England; Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, op. 11 with pianist DiYi Tang; and Debussy: La Mer.

Other distinctive events include the New York recital debut of Vlada Vassilieva, first prize winner of the 2010 Nadia Reisenberg Award, in Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Center on Monday, November 1. After solo piano sonatas by Haydn, Prokofiev, and Scriabin, Vassilieva will play “Poem,” a work composed for her by Anatoly Zatin, her partner in the noted two-piano ensemble “Duo Petrof.” Zatin will then join Vassilieva onstage to perform “Icarus,” a ballet suite (part of the Bolshoi Ballet’s repertoire) by leading Russian composer Sergei Slonimsky, originally for orchestra, transcribed for two pianos by Zatin. For a pyrotechnical finale, Duo Petrof will perform the world premiere of Zatin’s two-piano transcription of “Jarabe Tapatio,” the famed traditional Mexican Hat Dance, based on a solo piano work by the late virtuoso Earl Wild.

The Schneider Concerts will continue its season with three concerts by award-winning young ensembles including the Zodiac Trio with Cellist Yves Dharamraj, Calder Quartet, and Old City String Quartet.
