The New school to host international conference on prosperity and inequality

"Prosperity and Inequality: India and China in Global Perspective"

New York City, March 10, 2010—India China Institute (ICI) at The New School will hold an international conference, “Prosperity and Inequality: India and China in Global Perspective,” on March 22. The conference will showcase critical perspectives on the alarming rise of inequality in China and India despite both countries’ economic growth in recent years.

The event will include the findings of the ICI’s 2008-2010 Fellows - visionary leaders who, for the past two years, have met during intensive residencies in India and China and The New School to discuss and collaborate on projects examining the problems of prosperity and inequality India and China currently face.  During these residencies, the Fellows worked on four main projects that include a unique documentary, Migrant Lives in India and China and two papers that integrate economic analysis to issues raised in sociological and political science perspectives.

Experts will compare growth, reform, and inequality in India and China, discuss how open governance and accountability can be improved upon in both countries, and re-examine the historical relationship between the two.

ICI Fellows are emerging leaders from India, China and the New School community, who come together for two years with the goal of helping shape the debate concerning future developments in India and China. Fellows come from diverse academics fields thus enabling them to engage in a unique process of analysis and understanding. The fellowship program is organized around four residencies in New York, China, and India, which provide occasions to exchange ideas among fellows and local experts and to design collaborative projects.

The conference will take place at The New School, March 22 at the Theresa Lang Student Center located on 55 W. 13th Street. Admission for the public is free but space is limited. Please RSVP to India China Institute at 212.229.6812 or [email protected].
