The New School Art & Design Public Programs:
Spring 2010 Update

February 23, 2010— This spring, The New School presents a wide range of public programs that build on the university's legacy as a haven for innovation and experimentation in the arts and its commitment to social activism and engaged citizenship.

To mark the launch of its new MFA in Transdisciplinary Design, the School of Design Strategies at Parsons The New School for Design and The Museum of Modern Art, in partnership with International Flavors & Fragrances, will present HEADSPACE (March 26), a daylong symposium on the conception, impact, and potential applications of scent and design. In addition, the Stephan Weiss Lecture Series will feature conversations around the theme of transdisciplinary design, including Yochai Benkler, Berkman Professor of Entrepreneurial Legal Studies at Harvard University, in conversation with Anna Valtonen, Rector of the Umea Institute of Design in Sweden (February 23); Andrew Blauvelt, design director and curator of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in conversation with Marije Vogelzang, eating designer and principal of Proef and Studio Marije Vogelzang in Amsterdam (March 25); and Natalie Jeremijenko, director of xdesign Environmental Health Clinic at New York University in conversation with Nigel Snoad, technical evangelist and product manager, Microsoft Public Safety Initiative (April 6).

The School of Constructed Environments at Parsons presents two events: the Kalil Endowment for Smart Design Awards (Feb. 25-26), featuring presentations by Kalil Fellows Sheila Kennedy and Frano Violich of Kennedy Violich Architecture; and Sabine Seymour, director of the Fashionable Technology Lab and Assistant Professor of Fashionable Technology at Parsons; as well as a roundtable event featuring Parsons deans Simon Collins, Bill Morrish and Sven Travis, and faculty members Clive Dilnot, Jamer Hunt. The new MFA in Interior Design will present the fourth annual AFTERTASTE symposium (April 2-3), featuring a keynote address by Claudy Jongstra, a designer who produces felt fabrics for interiors. This year, the symposium will focus on the theme "Moving In," which explores interior spaces conceived and built collaboratively among interior designers, architects, exhibition designers, artists, engineers, product designers, lighting designers, and furniture manufacturers, as well as fabricators and clients.

As part of its ongoing mission to spark a critical dialogue about art and design, Parsons and The New School will present a number of discussions with notable artists, designers, scholars and writers, including Javier Tellez (Feb. 24); Hubertus von Amelunxen (Feb. 24); Lexy Funk of Brooklyn Industries (March 3); Huma Bhabha (March 3); Aleksandra Wagner (March 3); Henriette Suhr (March 10); Byron Kim (March 10); Barbara Probst (March 23); Lin and Lam (March 24); John Miller (March 31); Sarah VanDerBeek (April 14); Susan Yelavich (April 15); Kurt Kauper (April 24); Hank Willis Thomas (April 28); Spencer Finch (April 20); and Marlene McCarty (May 5).

In addition, The Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School will present programs with leading arts organizations including the Bronx Museum of Arts on the civil rights movement (March 26); and The SculptureCenter on the legacy of Rosalind Krauss' seminal text Sculpture in the Expanded Field (April 19).
